System Update - Noob Help Required

Forgive me. I am a proper noob when it comes to this.......

I bought a chipped Wii and the guy told me it would be fine just not to update from NTSC discs.

Everything was fine until I purchased some copied games from the markey the other week. NONE of them worked. They ALL said a System Update was required and I am a bit wary whether to do this or not as I have heard some scare stories and I am also unsure if the discs I have are PAL or NTSC.

If they are PAL is it safe to update like the guy who sold it to me said it would be? I dont want to brick it?

From some searching it seems I should be running menu v 4.1 ( I'm currently running 3.3 ) by updating this would it allow my newer games to work ( FIFA 10, Tiger Woods 10, etc )

This is where it gets complicated - I really dont know what to do.

From what I have read I copy some stuff to my SD card and run it - I just dont feel very comfortbale / confident of doing this. I did download something called ' Offline Downgrade / Upgrade ' and selected prepare.bat and choose v4.1 - but it just gave me a load of BAD files. So I dibnt want to copy these over on to my SD card.

    I'm at my wit's end

    Please help

theres not really any need to update to 4.1, but doing so wouldnt harm.

If you run a game and it asks for an update, what your actually missing is some of the newer IOS files.

These can be downloaded and installed with WAD manager.

As you have a modchip, it is possible for you to update with a disc, but i wouldnt recommend it as the highest firmware on a disc is currently 3.4 which isnt a great place to be!

If you did decide to update to 4.1 then you need to grab a copy of Waninkoko's 4.1 updater, as this is the safest way to update.

    Thanks davepm

I have downloaded Firmware Updater 4.1 - there is 2 readme.txt files and one .dol file - is that correct?

Do I just put the Firmware-Updater_4.1.dol file in my SD card and load up the Wii - that simple?

Head some people going on about backing up NAND and boot2 files - aint got a clue what they are on about to be honest

Just had a look at the guide ' This is the ULTIMATE Tutorial for everything you need for System Menu 4.1 '

This is what I mentioned in my OP.

So I dont need the Firmware update then? Just the Online Downgrade Upgrade?

I read the OFFLINE section - The problem here is when I select prepare.bat so the sd folder is generated? When I do this I just get a load of BAD files
