Wii Hacks Rocks
Hi, big thanks for the info. Have just soft modded my Wii 4.2E using Messies full hacking guide for 4.2. Total success. Started playing back ups from Skymaster enclosure with Samsung hard drive and am now using WD Elements 320 gig 2.5" which boots up and turns off with Wii. WiiHacks rocks.
Hello, my friend have an old console with firmware 2.1E.
I want to softmode it but i found tutorials for firmware greater than 3.1.
What should i do ?
It is ok to update to 4.2 using nintendo update and then softmode using tutorial for 4.2 ?
Later Edit: I updated the firmware using Console update and then i softmoded using 4.2 tutorial. Everything works fine.
Have a nice day.

Hi, great to hear you got going. From what I can see, you will also be able to play back up discs on your consol where as I can not as I have the new drive which will not allow -/+R discs to work. I just use the USB loader. Enjoy your Wii.
How do the USB loaders work.
I have done searches on this and carn't find out about it.
I can only think it does this, does it load the game onto your USB drive for you to copy it, then you burn that image to disk.
Are USB loaders installed on the WII. ?
I am trying to figure out how it works, when you put an original game in the WII, do USB loaders allow you to copy the game to a USB drive, then you would burn that image to disc using "imgburn" or another burning program.
Hi, I am not sure how to copy games using the drive in the Wii but I am led to believe that it takes a long time and you need to network your Wii to your computer. I am sure you can google this and find out how to do it, it may be in this forum somwhere. I use a LG DVD-ROM drive GDR-8164B (this is one of not many DVD-ROM drives that will read a Wii original disc) and this takes about 2 3/4 hrs to copy. I have this in a external case and just plug it into a usb port when I want to use it. I then use a small program called "Raw Dump" (you can google this also or can find a link to this on this forum somewhere). Put your original disc in the GDR drive, open raw dump and click "start dump". This will create a RAR file for which you will need a small program called Win Rar to open. You will need a external usb hard drive (I use a WD Elements 320 gig 2.5" unit). This needs to be formatted to WBFS. I use WBFS Manager 2.5 (you can google this and download for free). Load this program on your computer. Plug into your computer your external hard drive (not all external hard drives will work, just google a list of compatible drives, that is how I came up with the WD Elements unit and it powers up and down when you turn the Wii on). Open WBFS Manager, locate the external hard drive in the drive list and click format. Once format is complete you will not need to do this again when you add more games. Now in the manager right hand pane click browse, find the rar file created from the original Wii disc and open. After this is loaded into the right hand pane click add to drive and it will transfer the copy onto the hard drive which is the left hand pane. Do this for as many games as required. You can put a number of games into the right hand pane and they will all transfer at once with add to drive. Your external hard drive is now ready to use on your Wii. It will need to be plugged into the usb port on your Wii directly behind the on/off button not the one behind the disc load slot. I wish to point out that I did not work out how to do this myself but found the info on various forums. The best one being WiiHacks.com. If you wish to make a back up disc instead of using the usb hard drive just copy the RAR file to disc at 2x speed using ImgBurn. BEFORE YOU CAN USE THIS EXTERNAL DRIVE you will need to soft mod your Wii and install Home Brew Chanel and required apps. I used Messies guide for 4.2 system menus. You can find this by going to the WiiHacks home page and scrolling down to Messies guide for 4.2 system menus. If you have system menu 3.1 - 4.1 just reed down a bit and you will get to "the excellent guide made by Dog eggs. If you have a older system such as "cotosilv" then it seems you can update your system menu on line to 4.2 and use Messies guide. I hope this helps. Regards.

Thanks for that bumnutz
I have printed that out for future reference, when i become a bit more knowledgable.
I have gone over the giude for my version quite a few times, and with me being new to this and before i try anything would like to know how the process works regarding USB flash drives and USB loader's, and how you would copy a game doing it this way.
If anyone can give me a link or tell me anything about this i would be grateful.
In the guide it mentions a 2gb memory card, thats not a problem, and i can follow the rest of the guide from there.
Its using the usb USB flash, and how the USB loader works, and basically how the game is put on the usb flash that i am trying to understand.
(ie. is the game put on the usb drive as an ISO image, and you just burn that to disk
Softmodded Wii 4.2u
Hoping you can help me sort my concern at the moment.
I have successfully softmodded my 4.2u system and was able to play games that I have saved in my HDD either thru NeoGamma or USB loader.
I was recently received several games from a friend who saved it in a DVD. When I tried plugging it in my Wii, i would get a DVD error 1101 message. The same thing also happened when I tried to load the backed-up Wii Resort from my HDD.
Appreciate your help.
Thanks for this FAQ. It's a good start for a newbie like me.
Cotosilv, the usb loader is a app (application) that is installed on the Wii when you install Homebrew. It is included in the apps when you use Messies guide to soft mod your Wii. It allows a usb external drive which has the games on it to be read by the Wii. It allows the Wii to load games from a external drive.
