Question Lots of Homebrew Crashing, Exception (DSI) Errors

    The Problem
I am using a USB HD (FAT32 with 32Kb clusters), no SD card, and the HBC. I have tried downloading numerous HB using the HB Browser. Over 50% of programs I run crash to a black screen, something about Exception (DSI). Sometimes a program will start up and work okay, sometimes it starts and crashes during use, others won't start at all. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

First, have a re-read of those rules you accepted earlier today. You would have seen that we do not allow external links to outside guides to be posted. We don't need to know a specific guide is crap, we already know it, so don't confused those who don't know it by linking to it.

As for your process, we would have preferred that you followed Softmod Any Wii from the start vs. cherry picking the parts you want, though the syscheck did look good. Can you check the syscheck thread linked in my signature for the b19 link and use that to get a fresh syscheck? Don't break it up like you did with the b13 one, post the entire output within spoiler tags like you did above.

DSI error is usually when an app wants to use a cIOS that isn't installed or not installed correctly. But what I saw if the syscheck has things looking good.

What specific apps are you trying to run that is throwing this error?

I sincerely apologize about the TOS. I've had this on another website for a few days and I got no responses. I copied and pasted it and was in a hurry at the time so I just clicked right on through the rules. I'll go back and give those a read tomorrow morning .

I will also have to get back to you tomorrow morning about which programs are causing me grief. Part of the problem (just figured this out) is that I had my USB drive connected to the second port. So I was getting errors related to that (requiring a hard reset) along with the DSI errors. Last night felt like a cluster-duck experience, one crash or error after another. I can't recall anything off the top of my head (except for a Doom port). I will sit down tonight and get a list together.

Here is the updated sysCheck you requested. Thank you very much for your time and advice .

The mod looks good as far as I can tell, so if there is still anything else wrong, it is either the hardware you are attaching to it (USB Drive) or the apps (or their configurations) that are causing the problems.

Get back to us with what is failing and when, and make sure you are using the correct USB port.

Alright so last night I tried numerous programs. I didn't bother with the Doom port I spoke of though (wasn't important to me). For the most part the DSI errors just weren't happening. Quite a bit of the homebrew I tested gave me weird problems (see below) but I attribute these to the HB programming itself vs a Wii issue. Examples:

    1. Homebrew Sorter - It doesn't list any of my HB programs. Nothing I tried changed this.
    2. WiiRadio - I cannot access station listings. I was able to get shoutcast to work in WiiMC though.
    3. Comix Channel - When you click on Load it popts up an error that reads "Fat init error". Sucks. I was looking forward to this one.

The two programs that were throwing DSI errors left and right last night were MegaCodeDownloader and the Homebrew Browser itself. Anytime I attempted to download a game list in MCD it would produce a DSI error. Homebrew Browser would work for a while but sooner or later when I would initiate a download it would DSI error. This happened eight times in 40 minutes. Very frustrating. Are errors with this program somewhat common?

Luckily for every program that doesn't work (except Comix Channel) there is an alternative that does. So I'm pretty darn happy now that I've gotten most of it sorted out.

Most of our softmod does have a tendency to be somewhat dependent on SD card being present (as a default). Some software doesn't care what you use so long as it's FAT32 and a single partition and active. Sometimes you have to insert a pathing variable in an .ini file (subset support files for a given application in terms of a configuration helper). I do know that it can be done and is done; the thing is, I've never bothered (to convert to FAT32 USB solely; I'm still old school WBFS in tandem with a SD card).

While on the surface everything appears correct (based on SysCheck); we've seen folks who've come here after doing an out of date guide and getting unpredictable results on an outwardly acceptable SysCheck. Sometimes users will redo the ENTIRE guide and whatever issue that was there before disappears; sometimes not. Personally, I'd do the entire guide from beginning to end (or at least from the HBC already installed spoiler) and in your case to do the IOS update, which normally isn't required when a user is already on System Menu 4.3. Just a thought, to rule out any unforeseen issue we'd not be aware of.

Glad you're making progress; you DID follow our FAT32 guide, right? Not some other half-baked one? If you need a link, let us know (usually can be found in llaffer's signature).

Yes I did follow your FAT32 guide to a tee. To start from scratch, is there anything special I need to do? Should I format the Wii or just start following the steps in the guide, essentially reinstalling over whatever currently exists. Just want to make sure I start off on the right foot.

The reason I don't want to stick with just the SD card is the space limitation. I'd much prefer to use a HD. Frankly, as long as my games and some basic Emu's work I'll be a happy camper. I can deal with the occasional HBB crash. I doubt I'll be using it very often since I've got all the apps I want setup. Will I need to start fresh with apps too or can I just backup and restore those after I finish re-softmodding?

Thanks so much guys. I sincerely appreciate your help .

If you read the guide, it'd answer your questions posed in the first paragraph above. Cherry picking as llaffer says = bad idea. Your questions worry me as it definitely says you didn't read it the first time. Not knocking ya, but trying to make a point.

If you follow the guide, it will have you format and copy files over onto the SD card two or three times. If you're currently not using an SD card and all is on your FAT32 drive, it'd be a non-issue when done. Wouldn't you simply remove the SD card?

I went back and scanned the guide before I asked the above question. I will go back and read it carefully right now. I set the entire system up using an SD card. After the entire process was complete I transferred the apps folder over to my HD and stopped using an SD card. I will go ahead and tackle this process again. I'm sorry for asking something that the guide already addressed. I don't want to waste anyone's time . Thank you again for your help !

I meant in terms of your question as to whether format your Wii (no), or where to start. It's spelled out in the guide --- there are two places this is addressed. You can either go with the first set of spoilers before Chapter 1, Part 1 (entitled, "Update any existing softmod") or Chapter 1, Part 1 spoiler (entitled, "Softmods with HOMEBREW CHANNEL installed"). That's your starting place; usually the latter-most is more straight forward than the former depending on user knowledge.
