Wiis that have never been updated

    Hey there everyone,

I've been reading up on playing burned Wii games, and one thing that gets mentioned occasionally is "before the update".

If I am understanding correctly, it seems that there was an update to the Wii software shortly after release that prevented copied games from being played? Can anyone provide some background here? It is mentioned often but I can't find any explanation.

With that being said, I own a Wii from one of the earliest batches, and it has never been updated or connected to the internet. It doesn't have any extra channels. For a console like that, might it be easier to play copied games? Basically I don't want to screw with my Wii if I don't need to.

    Thanks very much,
    Mike

No Wii can ever play "copied games" without modding it. If you wish to play your game backups from USB or burned DVDs you have to mod it.

If I spelled something wrong, I'll just blame it on auto-correct

"before the update" could mean that they updated their console and Nintendo wrote over their softmod. All Wii's can be softmodded, i prefer the earlier Wii because you can install BootMii as/in BOOT2 and the earlier DVD drive can rip and load Wii and GameCube games.
