    Need help about my wii.

So my friend gave me his wii yesterday. So i decided to go buy SSBB(25$) and have fun with my brother, but when i entered the cd, the cd could not be read, so i decided to look on the internet what was wrong. I found out that what caused this could be the lens, so i used almost all the methods on youtube to clean my lens, i tried for 2 hours but nothing seemed to work. Later i discovered that my friend has modded his wii and thats what maybe caused the disc-not-reading problem. So i tried to learn if his wii was soft or hard modded but he didnt remember because he modded it almost on release date. I wanted to soft mod it since i found a sd lying around, but i had problems formatting it since i dont have any means of connecting it to the PC. So what i want help with ,is, how to understand if it is hard or soft modded(Additional Info: there is no hbc on wii menu and i just updated to version 4.3)and what can i do in order to play the SSBB i just bought. Normally i would not care much but this is the gift i took to my brother for him getting out of hospital and since we literally have about 0 money lying around i can not afford to buy anything i dont currently own like usb sd reader and things like this. If this is not the right place to post it please let me know since i want to get this over with as soon as possible since i dont know if he will need to get hospitalized again, i am really greatfull to any help, thanks in advance.

Updating your Wii isn't recommended. The fact it accepted and took the update indicates your friend (for example) didn't follow our softmod guide. I will link it and a hardmod identification thread (but you'd require a tri-wing screwdriver to open it up to visually inspect/compare).

Let me put it to you this way:

Do the "Softmod ANY Wii guide," from start to finish. Yes, this will require to have access to a PC to get the files onto a SD card (2gb or less, fullsize SD --- not a SDHC, nor MicroSD in an adapter).
