Update at chipped / softmodded wii

Hi everyone! I would like some help here because i'm new to all this wii thing and i bought one yesterday, used of course. well, this wii can play coppied games, so it is chipped or softmoded. The truth is i can't tell if it is the one way, or the other. The question is, will an update cause the "reset" of this chipp of softmod? because it wants me to update in order to use the wii shop channel! please help!

If you have Home Brew Channel, it is soft modded. Go through Softmod Any Wii guide to get your system current and be sure to include the files for Shop Channel v21 in Chapter 2 when you get that far.

If you don't, then it probably is hard modded. I can't speak for if an update will break it or not as I have no experience with hardmods, but you can still softmod your system on top of the hardmod using the same guide I mentioned above.

A link to the guide is in my signature.

Thank you very much for the detailed help. but , to be honest, the only reason i want to update, is to add apps to my wii. is there a way adding them via usb, without softmodding it or whatever? i'm not so good with this kind of staff and i'm a bit scared to do expirements...

You can buy them from Wii Shop Channel. But if you are talking about homebrew apps, it requires a modded system.

Not sure why this entire thread is in "Hot Topics," but it will be moved momentarily.

If it's a hardmod and updates to say 4.3, you'd lose the ability to play ANY backups not from your region. If you're curious, ShadowSonic2's got a Wii dissassembly guide here, while davepm's got a ModChip identification guide here.

A wii can be softmodded, even if it's hardmodded (which will resolve the Shop Channel or anything else wishing to update). You may want to look into that.
