looking for a little help making a old softmodded wii up to date..
whats good everybody.. so this is my situation. I got a wii in 2008[Model RVL-001USA] (LU35..)
I Softmodded it myself 6 years ago. i had it running great at one point to where i load a disc and it would back it up to the 500gb external HDD. i eventually collected over 300+ titles, well the hard drive died after 4 years and i had deleted all the back ups.
My goal is too make the softmod current so i can run all the games, sometimes i had mess with the configuration to get certain games to work but it seems most of em dont now. nothing happened to the wii, never updated, it runs fine i believe its on 4.1u im not sure i have to check all the specs. i would like to know is there any DO's and DONT's i may have missed that will result in a brick, or a highly recommended guide to doing this. i have a new 500gb hdd that i am willing sacrifice for this wii for the last time.
Is this wii compatable with Wii-U or does that require a whole new console.
I been gone a while, so if i sound dumb its cuz i am very rusty..but it all lost my interest at one point, but the damn mario and zelda commercials got me going again.
if this is in the wrong section my bad feel free to move it to the right spot, thanks in advance

Well, I'll try my best to answer this for you.
To get your Wii Softmod up to date just go to our Softmod ANY Wii guide (link in signature) and start from "Softmods with Homebrew Channel already installed". Make sure to read the guide a few times before actually doing it. Also don't skip anything unless it says optional.
Next, Wii U. I'm not entirely sure what you're asking about this so I'll clear it up best I can. Wii U is a brand new stand alone console. Wii U games will not play on a old Wii, however, old Wii games WILL play on a Wii U. Almost all accessories for the old Wii can be used on the Wii U as well. The only instance I know of where you'll find a Wii U accessory (or anything Wii U) working with the old Wii is if you use Devolution to USB load GameCube games. Devolution will allow you to sync and use a Wii U Pro Controller but it is usable ONLY for Devolution, as soon as you exit the Devolution app the Wii U Pro Controller will lose sync and will not re-sync until you load Devolution again.
If I missed anything or you have more questions feel free to ask. I also recommend you make a post in the Introduce Yourself section of the forum as you'll get a nice long welcome message with many helpful links that should enlighten you on the whole Wii and Wii U modding scene
Edit: One more thing, make absolutely 100% that any WAD file you install is indeed for the Wii and not the Wii U's virtual Wii mode. Contrary to believe they are not compatible with one another and installing a WAD from Wii U's vWii on to a normal Wii (or vica versa) will most likely cause a brick.

Thank you very much, i was really into he whole scene from 2008-11 but wii lost my interest as all nintendo consoles do in their later years, but then re introduce a zelda or mario or punch out and im chasing nostalgia again. you answered all my questions very clearly and were very helpful. thank you.
what are some of the newer titles you might recommend a friend?

For Wii, Zelda Skyward Sword, New Super Mario Bros., Super Smash Bros Brawl, Kirby's Return to Dreamland, Super Paper Mario and Tatsunoko Vs Capcom.
Wii U, Zelda Wind Waker HD, New Super Mario Bros U (New Super Luigi U is great as well), Ninja Gaiden 3 Razors Edge, Injustice Gods Among Us and Batman Arkham City (or Origins). Sadly there's not a whole lot for Wii U worth getting at the moment.
If I spelled something wrong, I'll just blame it on auto-correct
