    Question Used Wii Purchase Question

    Hi

    I am a console noobie. I was always fascinated by the Wii. Sadly, it isn't officially available
    at where I stay. Hence, the brand new ones are exorbitantly priced. I am thinking of buying
    a used Wii. So, I have a few questions & I would be grateful to know your views.

    1. Is it ok to buy a 2-year old Wii?

    2. What software/hardware defects/problems should I look for before I decide?

    3. It has Motion Plus as Add-on. How do I check if the Motion Plus add-on actually works?

    Thank you.

    1) Yes, in fact the older the better. Older Wii's are BootMii as boot2 compatible giving you the best brick protection.

    2) None that I can think of. Every firmware is able to be softmodded now, and as for hardware there isn't anything you'd really be able to check before buying it or possibly without opening it up. Things like the disc drives date and such. Just try to get one that has GameCube ports as it's more likely to be BootMii as boot2 compatible (as stated previously).

    3) Play a game that requires motion+ such as Wii Sports Resort, Red Steel 2 or The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword. If the game won't let you play, then the motion+ Defective.

    @SNES_Master

    That is a reassuring reply. Thanks. Didn't know Wii was like Wine - "older the better"

    "BootMii as boot2"
    - No idea what is that but brick protection sounds good!

    Since it is old & if the DVD drive is working fine it should also mean I would
    be able to play DVD-R backups along with games via the USB Flash Drive
    after Softmodding it, right?

    I will let you know the firmware version to know more about BootMii,
    Homebrew, DVD-R backup etc. etc. compatibility.

    If your Wii is 2-years old, it won't have boot2, it was only available in the first year or so of production, it's an awesome nice to have, but by no means critical.

    The year threshold to "play backup media" is about 2008. So it would still have to be a 5-year-old system at best. So if you are sure yours is a 2-year-old system, it won't be able. We don't suggest you use backup media anyway. We advocate USB loading. It can be done on any Wii that is moddable (all except for the newest Wii Mini).

    Question Can I Softmod a Hardmoded Wii?

    Hi

    I am thinking of getting a used Wii. Reference: Link
    This is supposedly able to play Copied disc's, however
    the owner is sure it had not been tweaked "software-wise."
    So I assume it must be a hardware mod. Is that assumption
    correct?

    If so, can I softmod it using the popular guide in this forum?
    Can a hardmoded wii in any way inhibit softmoding it so
    that playing games through the USB port is no more an option?

    Thank you.

    =========================================
    What makes hardmodding bad
    Requires opening the console.
    Some require soldering (most dont at this point)
    Does not allow for homebrew
    Most do not allow for USB disc loading.

    HOWEVER: Hardmodded wiis CAN also generally be softmoodded.
    =========================================

    This can be a concern! Someone, please elaborate.

    They all seem straight forward to me. What don't you get.
