Why are video files from Media Player of low quality.

I asked this Q regarding the video quality of video files played from the Media Player afew years ago, and then stopped but now I wanna continue this
    http://www.wiihacks.com/wiihacks-new...tml#post563638

I need to know if I can turn the wii into an Entertainment PC that can play all files with good quality. CUrrently I have the media player but the quality of the video is very bad.
Ie. I have a Blue Ray rip of a movie (which I made just incase mods are worried), and It suddenly becomes a less than dvd quality video when I play it on the wii but fine on a laptop or a pc.

    Any suggestions/discussions on this?
or is it my video file that is of bad quality?

The Wii is not capable of displaying anything more than 480p...anything higher will either not play properly, at all, or will be downscaled to 480p.

The most you can do for your Wii in terms of increasing the video quality is buy a component cable and set the system to use "HDTV 480p" for the display setting.

Edit: as for supported formats, the ones I know of off the top of my head are AVI, MKV and MP4. The best program for playing videos on the Wii is WiiMC.

thanks for that reply, it was the exact confirmation I was looking for.. so I guess the wii can't be used as a proper media center then.

That's not quite what I was saying...it can be used as a media center, but if HD video is what your looking for then you're better off getting a TV or Blu-ray player with USB support.

WiiMC doesn't like 3GP or MP4 much. I stick with MPlayer CE for those.
