Question Questions before proceeding with DM2.8...do I understand some of this right?

I have followed mauifrog's softmod guide and successfully softmodded my wii.
I have followed the FAT32 guide and have successfully used an external USB drive in place of the SD card and played a game from the drive using USB Loader GX.

However...just because I followed the instructions doesn't mean I really understand all that I did :>

Based on the guide, I currently have:
    Neogamma R9 Beta 56
    USB Loader GX v3.0
Configurable USB Loader v70 MOD r35
    WiiFlow MOD r348

My USB drive is an older WD My Passport 500gb (WDBAAA500ABK) formatted FAT32 and yes, 32k cluster.
I installed Wii Backup Manager on my PC to convert my ISO files to wbfs which get placed in a wbfs folder on the usb hdd.
I have read (only once or twice so far) the DIOS MIOS 2.8 guide in prep for adding DM. I only have a couple GC games but it would be nice to play them from USB hdd instead of disc.

So...first up...updating the USB loaders to the version necessary for DM2.8.
Since I have folders existing on the USB hdd for each one of these, I think I understand that I can just copy the new .dol file into the respective folders? So WiiFlow will go from 3.1 to 4.1; USB loader GX from r1180 to r1209; and cfgloader from r35 to r51. Is anyone aware of any problems arising from updating to these versions? I mean, I want DM2.8 to work but would prefer not to break anything else?

Channels...following the softmod guide left me with channels for each of the loaders. If I update the versions of the loaders, the .dol files, will the channel still work or will I have to fuss with them as well?

Next...installing DM wad file...refers to Wad Manager 1.7...but I can use the Wii Mod (v3.2) that was used during the SoftMod process to install it, right?

d2x - as part of the softmod guide, I have d2x v8...am I going to need to update to one of the v9 or v10 betas?

Finally (I think!) I have been reading the USB Loader GX guide as well but I don't really understand the purpose of parts 1 & 2? Can anyone explain to me in plain english what those parts are for? Part 3 I already have done as part of the Fat32 guide. So I think for DM I just have to be aware of parts 4 to end along with the actual DM guide.

So, did I get some of my assumptions right? Have I read and understood enough to be dangerous? Am I good to go ahead with DM install?

For CFG, no. It is very smooth. For GX, it is recommended to find the global configuration file and delete it so it builds a new one when you go from 1180 to 1209. For WiiFlow, I'm not sure as I've never used the old version and have used the new one very little, just for compatibility testing. CFG is my loader of choice and the one I am most familiar and comfortable with.

If they are true forwarders, it should would just the same. I have seen instances of GX where it wasn't a forwarder but the full app in a channel, so the user was going nuts trying to figure out why 1209 was on the SD card but 1180 was still launching. I don't use forwarders, myself and launch everything from HBC. I think I'm one of the few with this view.

Wii Mod 3.2 works just fine. It is what I use.

Think of Mios as a cIOS of a different number. Dios Mios is a replacement to the standard Mios for GC games. No other cIOSs are used when playing GC games. V9 or v10 will have no affect. I run DM just fine with my v8s still installed.

That is for getting an emulated NAND working, which is a separate beast, pretty advanced stuff, that I don't even try to use yet. So I can't help you there, other than to say it is optional.

Looks like it for the most part. Hope my answers helped clear things up.

Awesome! Thanks. So I will just have to delete the cfg file and reset my settings...I can handle that. So I guess I'll be trying to install DM today!

    So things went pretty well...except...

WiiMod(3.2) wasn't able to install the DM wad off the USB hdd. Looks for SD path. I did some searching & tried WiiMod Lite (v1.3) from gbatemp but when it tried to mount the device it gave a return code error and hung. I had to power off the wii using the button on the wii. So I ended up having to use an SD card with WiiMod.

Other than that all went well ... I did ignore all the emulated nand stuff. And I was able to rip and play a GC game via USB Loader DX (Harvest Moon Magical Melody). So...success!

I've never gotten Wii Mod to mount USB either, so will install WADs from SD. Nothing new there.

    Glad you got things working.
