    How to restore NAND?

I bought a Wii U yesterday taking advantage of the awesome deal Target has going on and it looks like when Wii U virtual console launches in order to take advantage of the upgrade prices I will have to do the Wii->Wii U transfer but I have some questions I am trying to figure out.

    1. How do I restore my NAND? I know how to back it up in bootmii and I assume the other icon restores it. I don't know much about this, do I use the RAW NAND dump to restore or do I use the unencrypted version? Doing this will restore everything right (game saves, channels, settings, etc.)? Do I just use bootmii and what will happen when I use the restore Icon, will it ask me to point to the NAND file to restore and which file is that exactly? Is there a guide for this?

    2. Using Nintendos transfer tool is safe right? It won't mess up my softmod and will just ignore anything that's not official is my understanding.

My understanding is I can backup my NAND, use Nintendos transfer tool which will erase all the stuff on the Wii being transferred, then restore my backup to get everything back.

    3. Do protected games saves get transferred by Nintendos tool? Mario kart, Animal Crossing, Smash Bros., etc.

    1. Was bootmii installed as boot2 or an IOS? If not boot2 then nand restore is not an option.

    2. Yes, using the transfer tool is safe. I had no problems with it myself.

    3. Yes, everything will be transferred over (except unofficial channels).

    1. I have bootmii installed as boot....my wii is a pretty old one.

    2. Good to hear.

    3. Awesome. I will have to check out these games to see how much better they look and it will be nice to have my game saves.

So can I just use 1 memory card and do the whole thing? Backup the Nand, do the transfer tool stuff, then restore the Nand. No computer required?

Yeah one card should be fine As far as graphics they aren't really going to look any better, unless of course you were using composite cables for your Wii. Despite what anyone says, on an HDTV there is definitely a noticeable difference between 480i and 480p.

I just found this on Nintendos support website.

    Will not transfer:

Software and save data for which transfer is not permitted, such as WiiConnect24 data

I did the same thing you are wanting to do: NAND Backup, transfer data over to Wii U, restore NAND.

I'm able to play my Wii Ware / VC games, etc. just fine, but if I go into Wii Shop, I'll be recognized as a new user since the old Wii Shop data is no good, having been transferred over to the Wii U, so all of the DRM on WiiWare/VC games will be taken away, resulting in those games being unplayable.

So if you want to do this, be sure that you do not launch the Wii Shop channel after the transfer and NAND restore.

    Wow, that is useful info.

I guess if that did happen you can RE-restore your NAND backup and get them to work again right?

Good to know so that I make sure to keep that backup handy.

Yes. That's exactly what I did. I went into shop, found out that everything was blanked out and my DRM games were no longer playable, then I re-restored the NAND to get everything back.

So no more Wii Shopping on the old Wii after doing this, oh well I guess that's not that big a deal.

Good thing wii points transfer too so you can continue to do your wii shopping over there (although too bad you can't use them for wii U eshop)

By the way I have to say I think the Wii U is really awesome so far, I am loving it.

Ok, I just did a test and was able to restore my NAND but now I'm thinking, some of my saves are on my emunand and so are most of my virtual console/wiiware and I am not sure how to proceed. ( I have not done the transfer yet)

Once I do the transfer, on my virtual wii can I just go in to shopping channel and re download my titles even if They were not in my NAND when i did the transfer?

The virtual wii has the same memory constraints of a real wii right? I might need to get another sd card.

    Edit:
OK, I just used save manger gx to move some saves from my emunand before doing the transfer. I wAs also able to redownload everything I have purchased after the transfer. I hear you can transfer multiple wiis so I may transfer my secondary wii as well. I guess I can do this again to update my vWii saves if I want with out even needing to hack my vwii.

so bootmii tells me my NAND backup is from a different wii now? You have to konami to restore it?
