Edit a pre-existing custom theme mym file

I want to be able to edit an already made custom wii themes, in very minor ways. Such as changing the Health screen background, or the cursors. I understand that mym files are just compressed zip files that can be unzipped with Winrar, 7zip, etc.
I have the TPLMii program for extracting the png images from the tlp files.

Recently I tried editing a Majora's Mask theme. I made sure the image sizes were right before converting them into tlp, with the original tlp file names.

    Health screen: 608 x 456
    Wii cursor: 64 x 64

I then compressed it again, using winrar. I typed mym as the output file extension.
Creating the CSM and installing resulted in a brick.

I wanna know the real way to edit a custom theme. I've searched everywhere, can't find any info on editing an existing theme, for personal use. I wanted to create a funny theme for my friend's wii, out of the Majora's Mask one.
Any theme creating theme experts exist on Wiihacks?
Help with this would be much appreciated

Not an expert on themes, but did experiment with a few a while back. I found these below to be very helpful.

And a link to a theme I downloaded about 18 months ago lol.
    4-X_DarkWii_Red_NTSC.rar
OMG!! I just found a Majoras mask one lmao! -->ANY_Majorasmask(1).rar

Thanks bmarlo. I'm happy to get any kind of answer on this.
That second link is basically a manual to theme making, so I'll be studying that til I'm ready to try again at editing themes (Not from scratch though)
I personally think that Darkwii Red theme is the best. I even got my Homebrew channel dark and red.
