Coming back to the hacked wii

    Hello all!

I have decided to dust off my Wii for my wife and I to start kicking each other's ass in Mario Kart Wii/64 and a few other games. As well as get ready to play kids games with my son. I also would like to try my hand at backing up my games to an external and playing them instead of having to change out discs.

First and foremost, my Wii was hacked a while ago (couple years)

I am currently on 4.1u and I did so by using the Super Smash Brother Brawl disc hack.

With that said, I have not touched my Wii in a while to use as a gaming console. It was mainly for Netflix/Hulu until I got my PS3.

Here is my plan and what I would like to do with the Wii long-term

    - Play games almost exclusively from an external drive - includes Wii Games, GC games, Roms, Homebrew games etc
    - Backup currently owned games and friends owned games to said hard drive.
    - Play downloaded games
    - Play emulators
    - Play legitimate games bought and downloaded from the Wii Store

Here are some questions that I had

    - I understand that a "scrubbed" game is a game that has be "scrubbed" of garbage data that was intended to fill a Wii disc. Can you play a "scrubbed" Wii game from an external or does the game have to be in an ISO or disc image format to play?
    - Is there anyway to compress game size to save space on the external without the loss of game integrity or having game-play issues.
    - I understand that there are USB loaders out there, dozens and as with most software only a select few are worth mentioning. Is there a one-all-be-all USB loader that will accomplish everything that I require or will I need multiple? Is having multiple installed going to create issues in the future?
    - Can all of this be accomplished with the current 4.1u software I have installed?
    - Is it possible to replace the internal hard drive with say a 2TB hard drive? Is there any benefit from replacing with a SSD if possible?
    - I have a 3TB external plugged into my router, is there a way to store games on this external and reach it from the Wii via Ethernet/USB adapter or is an external required to be plugged into the Wii directly?
    - I have not yet bought an external pending some of the answers to my questions about, particularly about scrubbed Wii games, but is there a brand that works better than others (I prefer WD over anything), is there size limitations to the drive, does it need to have an AC adapter or can it be powered via USB, with the PS3 the drive had to be formatted and folders in particular order otherwise it would not read correctly, is the same with the Wii?

Sorry for the long list of questions.

I appreciate any help given. Thanks much

    -TM

You can play scrubbed games from usb - I understand that a "scrubbed" game is a game that has be "scrubbed" of garbage data that was intended to fill a Wii disc. Can you play a "scrubbed" Wii game from an external or does the game have to be in an ISO or disc image format to play?

You can scrub it - Is there anyway to compress game size to save space on the external without the loss of game integrity or having game-play issues.

Your choice, usbloader gx, cfg usbloader, wiiflow. Try them all and take your pick. You probably only need one. - I understand that there are USB loaders out there, dozens and as with most software only a select few are worth mentioning. Is there a one-all-be-all USB loader that will accomplish everything that I require or will I need multiple? Is having multiple installed going to create issues in the future?

Yes, 4.1 is fine. - Can all of this be accomplished with the current 4.1u software I have installed?
The wii has no internal dive, external hdd is used. There are methods of installing an hdd internal by removing dvd, but not much point. - Is it possible to replace the internal hard drive with say a 2TB hard drive? Is there any benefit from replacing with a SSD if possible?

You can transfer files over the network from one hdd to the wii hdd, but there is not method to load wii games from a network cloud. Homebrew, movies and such can be loaded from the network, but wii games need to be local. - I have a 3TB external plugged into my router, is there a way to store games on this external and reach it from the Wii via Ethernet/USB adapter or is an external required to be plugged into the Wii directly?

There is a list of compatible drives on this site, in the recommended guides I think. Have a look at that before you make buy an hdd.

Usb loaders scrub games automatically when ripping a game to your HDD.
I would suggest you follow the Softmod any wii guide here->http://www.wiihacks.com/recommended-...d-any-wii.html
Look in the "Update any existing softmod" spoiler. That should get you on your way.
Also at the bottom of the guide you'll notice links to our "USB compatibility list", and
our Fat32 formatting guide for your external HDD.

    Good luck.

EDIT: Ah damn! Maui beat me to it lol.

Fully scrubbed games would be fakesigned, only loaded under cios. WBFS is smaller than cios, but not always scrubbed. The usbloader may or may not scrub the dumped game, or may or my not offer the option to scrub it. Wii backup manager has a full scrub option, but you have to enable it. Once the game is scrubbed, you can never burn it and load it on an unpatched ios. I think scrubbing is typically disabled by default, but when games are dumped only the data partition is dumped removing the update and another partitions making the dump smaller, unless 1:1 rip is enabled. Depending on the loader, I could be wrong as it has be awhile since I have dumped anything.

Ok I have read through the Softmod ANY Wii guide a couple times and I want to make sure I have everything correct and am not missing anything before I start blowing away my Wii. I am upgrading from 4.1 to 4.3 to have all of the available IOS and cIOS. I do not have a NAND backup either.

According to the guide, I have a pre-modded wii with unknown source of instructions, I am not sure if I have a NAND backup either, so I need to follow CH 1, 2, & 3

Since I have an already softmodded wii with Homebrew Channel already installed, I can following these steps

    Extract WiiMod-58-61_Hackmii_1.1.0 to sd:\
    Load the HomeBrew Channel
Launch WiiMod - WiiMod will load
    -Select Wad Manager -Press A
-Press 1, -press A -Install all wads
    -IOS58 and IOS61 will install
    -Press "any button" to continue
-Exit WiiMod to go back to the Homebrew Channel
    -Select hackmii_installer_v1.0 - Press A to Launch
    -Hackmii Installer Loads

Once Hackmii loads will installing HomeBrew Channel and Bootmii from the SD overwrite the existing? Will this mess anything up? Do I need to do a Letterbomb or any disc exploit?

Then I can prepare the SD card.

I can make a NAND Backup
    - launching HBC > Home > Bootmii
    - Press buttons on Wii - Power, Power, Power, Reset, Reset
    - Exit to HBC after backup
    - Copy the files to my PC

Download Modpack + IOS Update + RVL-Shopping-v21 and extract to SD card

    Verify Checksums

Launch Wiimod > Wad Manager > Press 1 > Press A > Make sure its complete without errors

    Select shop channel v21 > Press A > RVL-Shopping v21 > Press A > Press A to install > Press B to go back to WADs

    Select IOS-Update > Press A > Press 1 to install Wads > Press A

If I am already on System Menu 4.1 will I need to follow the Downgrade to/Upgrade to/ Install System Menu v4.1 steps?

    Install beta Priiloader

Depending on Wiimote I need to install either 0.7 or 0.8 beta 4

    Homebrew Channel > Priiloader > Press +/A

HBC should load > Hold Reset > System Hacks > Block updates/Remove disc check/move disc channel

    Change boot option

    Format SD > Extract AP-V4

If I followed everything correctly, I should be on System Menu 4.3u with all cIOS & IOS to be completely current until another big patch or whatever.

Did I leave out a step at all?

Is it possible to move everything from my wii, like purchased WiiWare to my USB drive and launch them from the USB Drive?

You know, this sort of post rings a bell for the experts that watch the thread of that guide for questions that relate to it.
