Transplant parts from New black wii to first gen white wii?

So my white wii first gen RVL-001 does not read discs anymore. I suspect it is the DVD drive that has crapped out on me and it sounds like it to. I decided to buy a new Wii because I still want to play my gamecube games and I believe it doesn't work either but thats at my parents house. So I didn't do any research and decided to buy the fancy new black wii. Turns out they don't play GC anything because Nintendo removed GC from it.

So now my question is, can I pop open both of these wiis and take a DVD drive from RVL-101 and stick it into a RVL-001? I don't have a soldering iron so I'm hoping I can just unscrew and disconnect the ribbon cables and call it a day. However I think it's much more complex than that.

I don't plan on playing burned backups as I have the discs and can always re-buy them. So not really worried about drive incompat. with burns.

I feared that. Do you know somewhere I can get drives that work for the RVL-001? I'll just return the black one back to walmart.

Actually that might not be a bad idea. You could save yourself some cash if you were to just get a replacement drive from the ebays. I believe you can get one for around $40.

Or just buy a new fromba pawnshop for 49.99 or on craigslist i bought one yesterday for 20 dollars with 2 controllers and softmodded .try that out if possible.

You can't do a straight swap out, no. Up to D3-2 version PCB drives, everything was interchangeable (probably around November, 2009). After that, they underwent a significant physical change (D4). While the drive itself remained a constant (duh, 5.25" device) the accompanying PCB board did not. The logic board controlling the drive was considerably reduced in size, causing it not to match existing screw holes, etc of the earlier boards.

While you're not handy with a soldering iron, in theory if you were you could detach the PCB/logic board attached to the drives and do a swapout. That way you'd have the new optical, and old controller board. The anti-piracy type stuff exists in the board, not the drive itself. What this means is you could have a new physical drive, but the old controller would still play backups or anything else you'd need.
