Question Not sure how to fix my modded Wii

I have a modded Wii that is acting up but I don't know what to do next. A friend of mine modded my Wii about 2 yrs ago and I haven't used it much over the last year. Now that my kids got some new games for Xmas, they want to start using it again but I'm having problems with it. Most of their old discs are saying they need to update the wii (which they haven't done) and when I go to use my external HDD, the Wii will only recognize 1 Wii controller. No matter how many times I try to sync the controllers, it will only recognize 1 at a time.

What I know about the mod...
I needed to supply my friend with a SD card and the external drive. Being that I'm new to this, I'm not sure of the terminology of what he did. Is this a softmod? My buddy moved out of state and isn't any help anymore.

    What I need to know...
Is there something I can do to get past the "update" that the system is asking for?
What could the problem be with the HDD? Would the update possibly fix this issue as well?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Look for the "Softmod Any Wii" guide in my signature, read it through at least thrice, ask questions in that thread if you have any, and then do the steps when you are comfortable with everything. If you use your current SD card to mod, be sure to back up the data on it so it's not lost as you have to format the SD card a number of times in the process. When done, you can restore your backed up data and all will be well again. (Better yet, use an extra SD card to do the modding and go back to your current one when you are done).

WOW that's a lot of reading material. I'm going to read through it some time over the next few days. Hopefully I'll have a chance to try it out.
