All Backups freezing up (USB Loader GX), please help

Hi everyone, I need help with a freeze-up problem, thanks to all in advance who can help.

Ever since I've been loading games from an HDD on my homebrew Wii, I've had freeze-up issues, it seems no game is immune.

This issue has been going on for months now, and I've been working on it off an on. It's been a month or so since I've messed with it, having simply become too frustrated. Here is what I'm working with, what I've done thus far and what the symptoms are:

I'm running homebrew on an old model Wii, 4.3U, and using USB Loader GX (latest version updated). My HDD is a WD 750GB Green drive (hence my leaning toward spindown as the culprit, as the green drives are supposedly 'energy efficient'.)

I've tried both NTFS and WBFS filesystems, and am now on FAT32, full partition, having used wbfs2fat to make the in-place filesystem conversion. Still experienced freeze ups with all three.

I was using ios 222 all along, and tried out ios 249 to see if it would help, but it didn't seem to make a difference, so now all games are back to booting on 222 globally.

My main symptom is that games freeze up after a variable time of play. The freeze-up is often accompanied by glitches and music skipping or stalling prior to the freeze. For example, in Metroid Prime 3, I know it's going to freeze shortly when I shoot a door but it doesn't open. Whenever the game freezes, I'm unable to turn off the Wii without holding down the power button, and the HDD won't turn off unless I unplug it.

One thing I've noticed is that, if I haven't used the HDD for several hours or days, I can play 30-40 minutes, give or take, before it freezes. But if I've just encountered a freeze-up, and I turn the HDD off, then go right back into the game, it's only a couple moments before it freezes up again.

That's about all I can think of to describe my symptoms, but I want to also point out one thing I noticed about Zelda: Skyward Sword. This is the one game I never previously encountered freeze-ups with. Maybe when I played it I just didn't play long enough, but I don't recall it freezing up on the few occasions I played it. BUT, now when i load Skyward Sword, it just boots me back to the Home Menu. This is the only game I've seen that does this, and it's a new symptom for that game. Just in case it's anything to think about.

Anyone have any ideas? Thanks everyone for your help.

Have you tried a prog such as easeus to make sure there arent any hidden partitions on the drive?

Okay I ran the EaseUS tool and it shows only the one FAT32 partition, no errors upon running a partition check.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to note that the HDD's behavior also seems to be similar when hooked up to my PC.

For example, I have an secondary drive on my computer where I also have backups stored (backups of my backups). When I try to move a game from the external drive to my PC drive, I might get away with one copy transfer, but the next one will just stall out or not even get started, having gotten hung up in the "Calculating" time remaining initial step.

Also, have you ran the WD tool to disable power saving mode?

I'll edit this post with the syscheck info if I'm able to get it shortly. In the mean time, please read the edit above where I added the PC backup transfer issue.

Also, in answer to your question, I've done extensive searching for a power-save disabling tool and Western Digital simply does not have one for this drive.
    HOW CRAPPY IS THAT

Try using a different USB cable

That is one suggestion I haven't tried yet. The cable seems like it's brand new. But at this point I'm willing to give it a go. You think that could really help? I guess I don't see how it fits the solution, but I've seen others give this advice to some people with similar problems. I'll try it.

By the way, my drive is in a MyBook enclosure with external power supply, forgot to mention that, in case it matters.

Also, I don't have an SD card port on my PC tower so I'm out of luck on posting a syscheck

Try a different cord first to rule that out. If still problems post back.

Hi again, well I swapped out the USB cable and tested this solution. I played for about 40 minutes and ended up with the same symptom. Music started skipping, then the game froze.

    What now?
