Get Rid of My SD Card and Run my Softmod from Hard Drive?

Hello everyone. This is my first post here on Wiihacks. I just wanted to give my gratitude to everyone on the site that helps eachother. This is a great community with wonderful guides. I have been off of the modding scence for a long time since the original xbox. But I bought a Wii and here we go again! lol. Anyway on to the question.

I love it and everything works fine. But I do want to get rid of my SD card and run all the programs from my hard drive alone. I want Wiiflow to use the hard drive for everything as well. I did some google searching and searched here...but I did not find any definative answers to how to do that. This is what I have tried.

I put all the files from thr root of my SD card on my FAT32 partitioned drive. I removed my SD card and and turned on my Wii. I go into the Homebrew channel and if I press 1 with the wii controller I can switch over to the hard drive and everything shows up in the apps folder. But when I go to the Wii menu and try to run Wiiflow from the channel it freezes and does not work. Or I get a dump and an ISI error. I then have to power off my wii and turn it back on.

So what do I need to do? Wiiflow runs fine off the SD card? How can I make my wii run fully off of my hard drive without the use of the SD card? I haven't done any other mods or add anything since I finished the guide so there would not be a lot of conversions or changes needed to be stictly on the hard drive. The only thing I have done is add some games to the hard drive for wiiflow to play and it works flawlessly.

I BELIEVE there should be a setting in WiiFLow (not sure 'cause I don't use it) to set it to load either from SD or USB. You may have to use your SD card to get into WiiFLow, then tweak that setting, remove the SD card, and give it another try.

This is by no means a definitive answer, but I tried going with no SD and I can tell you what I learned. First, the emulator channels (Wiiflow, NES, SNES (NOT HBC!)) that are installed access the SD card by default. There are ways to create personalized channel wads that might be able to target the HDD, but I'm not sure how to do it. It's above my paygrade, so to speak.

In my scenario, I use configurable USB loader to run Wii games, and I was able to adjust the settings for that and other various emulators to strictly use the HDD. The problem I ran into is that my HDD is not 100% compatible. It works perfectly fine in conjunction with the SD card, but for some reason it wouldn't boot 100% of the time on its own. Also, some emulators don't have setting options compatible with a HDD (like the Neo Geo emulator), so if I wanted to use those emulators I had to have an SD card.

So, bottom line, you will probably have better success rate by simply bypassing the installed hack channels, adjust HBC and various emulators to access HDD, and from then on using the HBC to access your various emulators and apps instead of the channels, otherwise you will have to learn how to create personalized channel wads.

OK But how do I uninstall the version I have of Wiiflow to install this new WAD?

I'll also try those other ideas of adjusting wiiflow. But I know the USB setting is just for where to read the game images from....not to look for coverflow and what not.

Also I am looking to not have to uninstall something or reinstall. Can I just take everything that is on my SD folder and drop it on my Hard Drive? I mean I tried that with the app folder and wiiflow folder....and nothing just blankness. I read that some say just copy the root of your SD card and drop it on your hard drive and your good. But its not true. I still have to press 1 on the wii remote and selct usb device for my apps to show up. Wiiflow doesnt work at all from the wii menu. Or do I need to put my Apps folder wiiflow folder and my bootmii folder into a folder called USB? Or do I need to change something in an ini file??? Please let me know. Thanks!

Look at it like this:

By default, HBC, and the WiiFlow channel you currently have installed are instructed to seek out data from an SD card.

The HBC's default can be changed when you press the 1 button like you mention. I want to say that once it's changed it stays that way until it is again manually changed, but I'm not 100% sure, only 95%.

Your WiiFlow channel's default, once installed, can't be edited. It will always seek an SD card. So, instead of changing the default, which is impossible to do anyway (at least without some sort of wad modification knowledge), you will need to install an entirely new channel wad just like the one to which billyhome links.

Do not confuse the WiiFlow channel (which is installed directly onto your Wii) with the WiiFlow app (which is located on your SD/USB). They are 2 separate entities with completely different functions. The channel's sole duty is to bypass the HBC and instead direct the Wii CPU to the specific WiiFlow app, whereas the app is the actual program that loads backup wbfs files. This is why you get blank screens when the app is not on the SD card. An app can be used without a channel. All the channel does is tell the Wii where to find and boot a specific app, and then its work is done.


So, to your original goal of eliminating the SD, you will at the very least have to add the WiiFlow channel to which billyhome links. And that means, yes, you will have to at least uninstall 1 item (old WiiFlow channel) and install 1 new item (new Wiiflow Channel). It's not hard to do.

After that, all that's left is to make sure that various option parameters within WiiFlow (covers, preferences, etc) are set to USB folders, or else, again, it will be looking in the wrong place for that data.

ok thats all i needed to know. So I put back in the SD card. I go into WAD Manager in the homebrew channel. Uninstall Wiiflow. Then reinstall Wiiflow from tutorial billyhome provided and I'm all set? Do I need to delete anything else or change anything else????

Just a thought, but I believe that the wiiflow.ini file needs to be messed with a bit to get it to run from USB. Change the line data_on_usb=no to data_on_usb=yes

Try that and see if it fixes your problem. You would also need to change any custom paths. TBH its been a long time since I messed with WiiFlow, so forgive me if that isnt the correct solution.

Thats what I thought. do I change the ini file on the SD card? Or remove the SD card and change it on the ini file in the wiiflow folder on the USB HDD?
