First you need to make sure whether your Wii is non-retail DVD compatible or not. If your Wii has/could have BootMii as boot2 then you can read non-retail DVDs. If you can only install BootMii as IOS, then your Wii won't read the DVD.

However, if it does read, there's this homebrew app called WiiMC you would like to check out.

Yes, that means you are compatible! Download the homebrew app WiiMC (from here or from wiibrew.org). Run the app, and you should understand how it works.

also, when i put in the dvd(not a backup but a genuine copy) it reads on the wiimc as a data disk? so i click the dvd icon and it starts reading it but then stops and reads, "unsupported dvd"

Well, I have no idea because my Wii cannot read non-retail discs. Also, you should use the edit button instead of double-posting.

Install the WiiMC of latest version.
Test it's function with regular D5 DVD, then D9 DVD, then MP4, then........

I seem to get a lot of unsupported DVD. If it sez data disc, then you are on the wrong icon. Use the 1 button to scroll up to the disc icon. Then it will see it as a DVD-Video.

AND yes i have even tried using the disk icon to launch the dvd but all i get is a Unsupported dvd message? Even though, i can play wii backup dvds in my wii, but yet this will not work Interesting? lol Still not sure what the problem is? any more help would be awesome! thanks!
