Try WiiMC app, you could download from the Homebrew Browser or from your computer WiiMC » Downloads and put it in your apps folder on your SD or USB
DVD playback, with DVD menu support (newer Wiis have incompatible drives)
    read this also WiiMC

i fionally got a chance to try this. I installed ios58, reinstalled homebrew and everything! When i ran the wiimc app, and put in the dvd and tried to start it, it tried to read it but then i got a message that said unsupported dvd? i can play wii backups, why cant i play a regular dvd copy?

At least it didn't say "you can not play DVDs on this Wii"
Try another DVD. A lot of mine are unsupported.

The wii is a pretty crappy dvd player even when it does work. Ripping them to an hdd and playing with wiimc is much better.
