The ACTUAL component that prevents dvd reading on new wii's
Hey all, sorry if the title is a bit ambiguous but I'll let you know my situation.
I bought a black wii a few weeks ago and I'm loving it, best console of this generation imo (if you can forget about the specs). Anyway, of course it can't read video dvds.
I work at a PC shop and there's a wii that's just sitting in the back for a few years that someone just neglected to pick up. I was thinking of taking the drive from it and putting it in my wii, however I read the problem report and just my luck, the problem on that wii is that it couldn't read games.
So here's my question, does anyone know the exact part of the drive that has been removed or changed on the new drives to prevent dvd reading? If so, I could possibly simply swap the components to make the drive functional AND be able to read dvds.

New chipset in dvd drive makes inpossible to read movie dvd. If you want to play movies you can swap drive or just controller board (needs soldering). Please check this site to find out about wii drive chipset. You are interested in chipset with number below D3.
Thanks That will help. And yeah, Something is wrong with the actual drive so I'll probably just swap the controller board.

If something is wrong with drive it could be everything - even laser lens or motor. Beside price of used dvd drive is almost the same as mainboard I've swaped my drive with older one because it was much more faster than unsolider and the solider new mainboard.

You may have a gem there in that old Wii. What are the first four letters/numbers of the serial number?

Cjizzle, I've got VEP72109 or AMW 7811XQ or VJB72109-2 sorry, not exactly sure which is which.
Attached are two images that basically show I am stuck. I unsoldered both the pcb's and tried to solder the one from the old drive to the new drive, but I ran in to a brick wall and that is that a) the pcb is way too large, and b) the laser ribbon cable on my drive has MUCH less pins that needed for the other pcb. You'll see what I mean in the images. I soldered my pcb back on to my drive and it works fine (because it's back to what it was originally).
The only thing salvagable in the old drive is the pcb. The drive is screwed, lazer and motor barely work.
I have a question, is it possible to remove the large black chip from the wide, old pcb, and attach it to my, smaller one? The large one on the OLD PCB has "GC2-D1 724P4344" written on it, and the large one on the NEW PCB has NOTHING written on it.
Thank you, I really hope I can just swap chips as it's the only feasible solution right now (unless I can somehow put that bulky seemingly incompatible pcb on my drive).

I was actually talking about the serial on the old Wii itself. You might have a boot2 Wii, which would be awesome. And you can buy a new drive motor and laser together for less than $20 on fleabay.
Ah, well the wiis serial is LAH102552889.
By the way, I'd prefer not to spend any money for the drive, I mean mine is perfectly functional now it just can't play dvds. It's not an absolute necessity but I'd prefer if i could get it working with what I have right now. So do you know if replacing the chips would work?
