I'm a little confused also. When you say you have an SD card that works fine. Hmmm! If it works fine. Then what have you done to loose communication with HDD, There should be apps on your SD card that tells the system where to look for the game files.
If you have your HDD formatted FAT32 you can run everything from the root of your drive. No need for SD card.
Give us some more info please.
    Maybe a system check ::
Also what guide did you follow to mod::
What Format and setup is your HDD::

Thanks for that little chip in cjizzle. I know, but whats the point when you can have a neat and tidy package

Not really. You can have your apps on the HDD or the SD card.

EDIT: Yeah, what grandpa said lol. The question was confusing. "Lost" as in you don't know where it is is how I took it...

ive been looking around my wii for the last couple of hours and it seems everything important is on the SD card, homebrew channel, usb config loader, etc. i just tried loading a backup to a new HDD but i think its not compatible with the Wii so it will be a while before I can buy a new external hd thats Wii approved and test everything out. I could burn a DVD backup i guess. I used some tutorial here on wiihacks, which ever the main tutorial was of January 2011 is the one i used.

and the old hdd is broken,

sounds like it's time to dust off all of those original game discs you must have.

im not concerned with the backups, what im trying to figure out is: is there important files that could have been on the hdd that i need?

    for instance

    a) when trying to load bootmii from the HBC the screen goes black and the Wii's CD drive flashes blue?

    b) i cannot connect to any samba shares from WiiXplorer or WiiMC, samba is tested and working on all other clients on the network. FTP client is not working either. Samba server is installed on Ubuntu 11.10, Ftp server on Mac 10.6. both are tested and working from other computers and even my phone :/

i feel like im missing something on the sd card that i might have stored on the HDD, but i dont know what it is (if theres any)

where do i start to make sure the Wii is in full working order minus any usb backups?

Bootmii needs sd card. If you lost that folder simply run the hackmii installer again and it will prepare your SD card with the files. If you lost your nand backup you should make another one.

Any other files needed for your apps can be replaced easily, you just reload them.

so i should go through the softmod guide, install bootmii, and make the nand backup, sounds good.

do you recommend that i complete the softmod process? (modpack, wad installs, priiloader?)

    thanks for helping!

If you have followed the guide recently then all you might need would be the app pack at the end. The nand backup part, yes you should do if you lost it.

The samba stuff.... Idk about that at all.
