    Outsourcing the mod...

    Hello everybody....

So I am about to get into the Wii and do a softmod to SM 4.3.

I have been looking around the local craigslist where I live and noticed that people offer services, blah, blah, blah. .... .

Considering buying the new USB HD to use a USB loader, and getting a SD card, the prices are about the same as the Mod setups that they offer. Some come with a lifetime warranty on the mod too? hmm, puzzling.

Anyone use these guys that do this before? I couldn't find any info in my searches on the forum.

I wouldn't mind doing the mod myself, maybe even having a little bit more control over what programs/apps get installed and what USB to use. but some of them I have spoken with seem to really know their stuff.

Im thinking they get these drives and sd cards are wholesale prices somewhere and sell them cheap to make a few bucks here and there.

    suggestions?

    thanks!

What kind of prices are they offering? Just curious so I can tell you if that is cheap or not.

I say do it yourself. You learn along the way, and have complete control over what is happening to your console. And as you can tell, we provide free tech support as well

Softmodding a wii is not very hard and IMO it is best to do it yourself so you know about everything you did if something screws up on you later.

Click on the spoiler in my sig and have a read through "A basic introduction to wii hacking" - this should give you a better understanding of some wii-related terms.

Then click on the "Softmod ANY Wii" link to go to the most comprehensive guide on softmodding i've ever seen. Follow that guide from start to finish and then let me know if you have any problems

Hey guys thanks for the replies...

As for the prices they are offering, it can range from anywhere form 30 for a mod by itself and up to 180 with a hard drive, sd card, etc. I spoke with one guy who actually recommended going with a 1.5 as opposed to a 2TB because of loading times?

Also, they don't give you more than one loader with the package, and I am not sure exactly which one I am going to use yet.

also thanks ISO guy, I agree that doing lets you know exactly what is going on with the Wii.

I think Im going to attempt the Mod later today!

You can do it all yourself for less than $100. Even cheaper if u go with a smaller hdd, 1.5tb is way more than you will ever need.

Sent using the WiiHacks app. Please excuse the brevity, punctation, and spelling.

    .
Yes, that is what I was thinking. Im not too interested in getting backups of my dvds loaded into the external hdd, since it isn't HD. Rather would watch them off my media server. That is the only thing I can think of as to why I would need any extra space beyond 1.5 TB. Plus that, the drives that are 1.5 TB are cheap!

It's easy. A 4gb SdHC can be had for 14$ and a 500 GB USB 2.0/3.0 hd powered via 1 USB cord can be had for 80$.

If you want help on soft modding, let me know. I just did it and thanks to some help from @cjizzle, it was easy and un-bloated.

Yes I think it is easy too.

Question: 4GB SDHC? I thought you couldn't use anything over 2 GB and it couldn't be a SDHC??

Also, from what I have read is the max drive size 2tb? and the wii isn't usb 3.0 right? It would have to be 1.1? The Fantom drive I am looking at is backwards compatible of course. It just looks so good in white, it will probably look great next to the Wii!

    Thoughts?

Bootmii can be very picky when it comes to sd cards. The best to use is a sandisk sd (2gb).

There have been many issues with hdds over 2tb. You should check our compatibility list before you go get one. You are correct, the Wii is not usb 3.0. Again, check the list to make sure you are getting a compatible one!

I am going try to out the Fantom drives I am sure. I would like to use the 1.5TB version here on amazon. I don't see it on the compatability list however. I wonder if anyone has tried it out.....time to google it!
