DVD on wii

What wii's can play dvds?

I had a old white wii, i think it was launch, and i eventually put wiimc on it and made it a nice little dvd player. I gave that one away when i got a new black wii, and was wondering how i could check on this. are all wiis created equal? or after a certain model did they take the "dvd player" out, or is it merely being blocked by some software i could remove or update? i like my black wii, but will kick myself a little if this was the case (i probably wouldn't of bought a new one).

also, if in preloader, if make my wii region free, could it play region free/other region dvd's. Im about to make an international move so this would be a nice upgrade if it were so.

The quick answer is only older white wiis have the capability to play burned/dvd media. Any other color wii has a drive that prevents this. Read the newbies guide in my signature for more details.

Oh, and if it was a launch wii, it also supported having BootMii as BOOT2, which newer wiis do not. This would allow you to recover from virtually any issue. So, having an old white wii is good :)

The wii makes a better media player than it does a dvd player anyway. Get your content in XVID format, put it on USB hard drive, and play it using WiiMC. Done.

whats a good converter program that dumps out vids in xvid format. right now i use handbrake (im on mac btw) but it turns them into mp4 which works with my ps3 (dont hate). mp4s dont do so hot in wiimc so i never really took it any further than that.

I'm sure handbrake can do xvid as well. Probably just need a profile. Do a 2-pass or CQ rip (if allowed) for best quality. WiiMC supports a bunch of different formats, experiment.

As for apple specific stuff, I cant help more there, I avoid them because I dont want to become one of you.
