Affects of replacing wii disc drive on bootmii compatable white Wii

Hi,

A friend of mine has an older wii that is compatable with the boot2 to bootmii loader, it is not modded in any way, and the disc drive does not read discs anymore.
I was going to try and replace the drive, but I wanted to be sure this would not affect the boot2 compatibility.

Am I correct in thinking that the boot sequence is only on the mother board and is not affected by the wii disc drive?
Changing the drive would just mean playing burned media is no longer possible, right?

The dvd drive has no affect on the vulnerable boot1, which allows bootmii to be installed as boot2.
Usb loading is far superior than backup disc's. In case you didn't know. :)

I agree that Usb is the much better route to follow, but he still needs a disc drive to get images of his games. I haven't been able to find any of those special LG PC dvd burners that are compatable with rawdump, so his only option is to use the wii to USB HDD.
