Bought a Wii for someone. it is modded. Please Help! I know nothing about this

I would first like to apologize if this is not the appropriate way to begin asking questions. I'm panicking and need assistance.

Ok so I pruchased a Wii from someone got it home turned it on and it appears to be modded. it boots into Priiloader v0.2 when I got to the system menu i saw the homebrew channel. The person I bought it for is not interested in a modded Wii so I thought I would reset it to factory settings through the menu.

After formatting the priiloader continues to come up but the homebrew channel is gone. I tried to update to the latest nintendo software in order to clear off any existing third party software and got error code 23004 (I think).

I'm looking for the easiest and simplest way to get my Wii back to factory fresh and then get it updated to nintendo's most recent firmware so that I can give this Wii as a gift.

Please help, I know nothing about this and I just want to get the modds removed without harming the system. (I would prefer not to have to format an sd card and remod it in order to delete it...

I also read that some games such as (super mario all-stars has the latest firmware on the disc. would putting it in write over the modded sections lingering?

You could just disable the hack in priiloader that blocks system updates, but there is no guarantee doing an update will work (the IOS version numbers could be maxed out, etc) and you could brick the Wii. Deleting the Homebrew Channel first made things a lot more difficult...

I would suggest installing the HBC again and then post a syscheck (guide in my sig). You can follow the instructions in the Softmod ANY Wii guide to install the HBC. Follow the instructions for 4.2 system menu.

Yes, by running and posting a syscheck. The big N's updates check the version number on your IOS'. If the version on your Wii is higher than the one N has, it will not be updated. This can be problematic, especially if the version number was altered by a mod and since that time N released a newer one. This could potentially cause some games to not run. Also, if for some reason the old mod you have did something that mucked up IOS80 and maxed out it's version, when you do update to 4.3 via N you could brick.

The safest way would be to just take the time to run bannerbomb v2 and install the HBC, load up syscheck, and post the results here so we can take a look. Not trying to run you in circles mate, just trying to help.

To remove the update block - hold in the reset button while powering on your Wii. From the priiloader menu select "system menu hacks" and disable all hacks. Your call, but I don't recommend doing an update yet. I dont want to knowingly assist someone in doing something that could brick you or only half solve your problem.

EDIT: You dont have to follow the whole ANY Wii guide, just to be clear. Just the part that installs the HBC.

Ok i'm going to work on it. if I have more question can I pm you? I will probably do as you said and once I get there I will post my system check and go from there. I was hoping that this was an easier process and that I would be able to move on but it looks like it will take me some time and patience. BTW it may seem daunting, but putting the HBC back on the Wii and running a syscheck is not as difficult as it may seem. Shouldn't take more than 15 minutes, and thats for a complete novice lol :)

Hoping someone may be able to give me a hand i'm following the guide in jizzle's signature and I have gotten the homebrew channel installed i'm trying to run system check but it looks like I need to install all the wads what region should I be using for canada? Usa?

Ok so I have been working at this and have come up with some result. I have not done all of the wad installations and have stopped just after installing homebrew and doing a system check. I'm posting my system check in hopes someone may be able to comment and tell me how things look? and if I can find a way to get this thing back to its original factory fresh state. I know that factory fresh is ill advised but it is for someone not so tech savy and is a gift.

Looks like IOS80 didn't get messed with so you should be good doing an official update. Power on the Wii while holding in the reset button. When priiloader launches select "system menu hacks", disable all hacks and save. Exit to the system menu. Now go to the Wii settings and do an official update. This will put you at 4.3 (removing priiloader) and also update some of the IOS that are in need. After the update you can format the Wii to remove the HBC. Since it is a gift there is no need to remove any of the old cIOS, they will not affect anything.

not that i'm looking to continue to bother you but just to be clear before I update, it appears that all things are in order and doing an update via nintendo will not harm the wii and that there isn't any other things that I should do or uninstall or change before doing so. Is there still some chance that I will brick?
