SEGA Feels They've Brought Too Many Sonic Titles to the Market

Nicholas Taylor by way of Joystiq

Apparently, SEGA have taken a liking to stating the obvious, as they have just said that they might have released a few too many Sonic the Hedgehog titles lately. When speaking with Joystiq, Alan Pritchard, head of sale and marketing at SEGA US, said that the releases over the past five years or so have been somewhat of a "mixed bag" and that the company should have been more strategic - like Mario.

“We’ve probably been guilty of bringing too many Sonic games to market too quickly,” said Pritchard. “Certainly if you look at Nintendo as a comparison, they have been a little bit more strategic with the way they bring their Mario titles to market.

“If you look at 2006 to 2008, there were a number of Sonic titles coming to market on various platforms with very little time in-between. If you look at all of the Sonic releases over the last four or five years, there’s a real mixed bag out there."

    Sonic Unleashed 2008

It's no mystery as to which Sonic titles Pritchard is referring to: 2006's "next-gen" Sonic the Hedgehog title received a Metacritic average of 46 and 43 on Xbox 360 and PS3, respectively; 2008's Sonic Unleashed scored an average of 60 and 54 on the same platforms; and 2007's Wii-exclusive Sonic and the Secret Rings and its 2009 followup Sonic and the Black Knight scored a 69 and 54, respectively.

“There are some 70s; there are some 60s; there are some 50s. We are upping the bar in terms of internal focus, investment, resource; and we plan to target 80-percent-plus. A Sonic game can sell if it’s a 60-percent Metacritic game, that’s not an issue. But is that really what the consumer wants? Is that what we should be doing as a publisher and a developer?

“We should be bringing much higher quality products to market to deliver a better experience for the consumer.”

Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1

With a bevy of Sonic titles debuting this year, including this week's digital-only Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1, the Wii and DS bound Sonic Colors and the Kinect-enabled Sonic Free Riders, it's clear that Sega isn't interested in slowing down the pace of speedy blue hedgehog-brand titles. And Pritchard tells us that we can expect more soon. "The early part of next calendar year, we have two very exciting, huge announcements to make. I'd love to be able to tell you more about them now but I can't. That's further evidence of how we're looking to improve and enhance our Sonic strategy."

It's good and bad. They need to focus on the fans as well, which they did by finally changing Sonics voice. He now sounds his age. But, only dissapoinment as a Sonic/Nintendo fan was that Sonic 2006 never made it to the Wii. :'(

Believe me, you're not going to miss it. I had a 360 four years ago with this game, and it was a big mess of glitchy, buggy and laggy worlds.
Some pits were bottomless, forcing you to restart the whole level instead of from the last checkpoint, loading times were 50 seconds long, you fall through the ground at some points where there's no pit, textures were displayed incorrect sometimes, the controls were a real pain, and the worst thing of all, you had to play as Silver and Shadow sooner or later. If it weren't for the glitchy and buggy design, and if Shadow and Silver would not have been included, it would've been a good game if there were more stages with Sonic only.

I like Sonic Colours. Only real complaint is the limits of the Wii. If you're dashing for example, and there is a pit in the far distance, you don't see it because it's too pixelated, resulting in acting a little bit too late. Other than that, I am happy with it.

The best choice which SEGA can make, though, would be to release a third Sonic Adventure. I really liked Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 on the DreamCast ten years ago, especially the Chao Garderns. I've actually never realized how great they were. Guess I'll try to get my hands on a copy of the GameCube versions via eBay or something.
