Wii U Unable to Play DVD & Blu-Ray

In a recent interview courtesy of the Game Guys, it has been confirmed that the Nintendo Wii U gaming console will be unable to play DVDs and blu-ray compact discs. In addition to this negative news, Nintendo’s Vice President of Corporate Affairs – Cindy Gordon also stated that the Wii U will only be backwards compatible one generation. This essentially means that the Wii U will only be capable of playing Wii U & Wii games, leaving out the traditional GameCube games that we’ve grown to love. However, it was stated that the Wii accessories such as the Wii Balance Board & Wii Nun-chucks will both be fully functional on the up-coming Wii U gaming console.
“That (playing DVDs and blu-ray discs) is not something that’s included in the system.
“Typically our consoles go back one generation so that’s what you typically see” – Cindy Gordon.
I’m quite disappointed in the above news even though DVD players can be picked up for approximately twenty dollars these dayes and blu-ray hasn’t really taken off as of yet, it seemed like a luxury feature that would of been nice to have incorporated in the Wii U gaming console. What does everyone else think?
