    @Shift_Lock

    Nice find, kotaku always has the best rumours

    If nintendo wanted to include these things in the first place, they would have included a DVD player with the wii. Fortunately, that's possible with softmodding.

    As for the wii u, well, nothing is unhackable - so I guess we can at least make it a DVD player.

    Why are nintendo consoles so cheap? This is the answer. They don't include much stuff in their consoles because they don't need to compete with other consoles. Nintendo consoles are meant to be different.

    But hey, the blu-ray player would still be nice

    Honestly, I'm kinda surprised that WiiU games won't be stored on Blu-Ray disks. Some of the games will probably be fairly large (especailly with the enhanced graphics). Would love to see 3D games, too. I guess they'll be limiting themselves to dual layer DVD's.

    I don't think blu-ray discs will be needed as some consoles (e.g. Xbox 360) don't use them and still have great graphics.

    As for 3D, well I have no idea about how large the game size will become...

    As you said, most games will probably be on dual-layers (except the movie spin-offs which never fail in disappointing us with pathetic graphics)

    There already are 3D video games, I thought they were on Blu-Ray. I guess not.

    Heres what I found:
    According to Kotaku, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata just confirmed that the upcoming Wii U will only play Nintendo’s proprietary 25 GB game disks, even though they are the same size as Blu-ray disks.
    Heres is one source:

    That means we probably won't be playing video DVD's (or Blu-Rays, which we already knew). I'm guessing this is a move to stop people from playing backup games. Dang you, Nintendo. I wonder how long it will be before someone reverse engineers the disks.

    True, but USB loading would take longer to make work properly, I'm guessing. And it also stops modchips from doing any good (except maybe autobooting).

    It doesn't matter how long it takes, we'll get it eventually. As for modchips, well most people are softmodding nowadays.
