You read right, original Wii games will be playable on the GamePad!

Wii U System Update Enables Wii Games to Display on GamePad

Edit: after having read the article, it appears the update is already available. Interestingly enough some people have stated that the black bar on the GamePad's camera is a sensor bar (I never knew). So the only question I have is, does this update effect softmods in the vWii? I can't wait to try Devolution GameCube games on the GamePad!!

I just downloaded and installed system update. Update did not break my vWii homebrew at all. Appears to simply mirror TV display of vWii mode to GamePad... including all homebrew!!! Truly badass! Yes, the Gpad has a built-in sensor bar. When you launch vWii from WiiU menu, you are given an option to display vWii to TV only, or TV and Gpad.

Wii Homebrew on the GamePad, I laugh at the awesomeness

WiiMC might be a fun use for that.

This is unexpected and awesome. If nintendo doesn't add support for the gamepad controller buttons hopefully homebrew will be able to figure it out.

So now do I bother to upgrade the rest of my wii vc games when they come too wii u?

I would, but it's really a matter of preference. Who knows if they'll add button support to the newly added Wii on GamePad thing, so it's worth it to update the VC games IMO.

I think that's why there is no gamepad button functionality. So they can keep that going. I expect a hack to emulate the gamepad buttons as a classic controller soon enough... In vWii it recognizes that there is a controller there if you press buttons. But that the controller is unsupported. Oh yeah, a hack is just around the corner!

I updated my wii u earlier and have had no trouble playing mario party 9, donkey kong country returns, zelda : skyward sword, but super paper mario doesn't even go to the wriststrap health screen, it boots straight back to wii menu. Has anyone else experienced this?

It's ok, it works now, problem solved: it was the original retail disc that I bought in 2007, am not using my hard drive for backups anymore, but for extra storage.

I took the disc out of the Wii U and tried it in my old black Wii, worked absolutely fine. So I then tried again in my Wii U and it seems to be playing fine now. Absolutely bizarre.

Yeah, that would be really lame if that is the sole reason they did not give us button support....to try to milk a few $1-1.50 virtual console upgrade fees? There is still the miiverse, save states, and button mapping features to sell that upgrade.

I think they might sell more Wii software if they added it....it still offers way more than the Wii U eshop.

So SNES, did this finally push you over the edge and convince you to mod your Wii U? I am still holding out but I am very tempted. I will do it when my warranty is up for sure......
