I have talked to many people who have no idea what the Wii U is as well.....

The marketing has been bad to this point but I have to think they will putting more dollars in to marketing once they have some more software out to try and sell the system.

Well can't get any more confusing than Apple's iPad naming. List in order of release:

    iPad
    iPad 2
    The new iPad
    iPad

Now my question is why the iPad can't run iOS 6, but the iPad can.

Anyways more on topic. I too had the same experience as SNES_Master when it was being rumored about. I wasn't quite sure of what it was and what Nintendo was doing. I thought it could have been an app of sorts until there were more details here about it.

Just like there was iPhone 4 and iPhone 5, but there has never been an iPhone 2 or iPhone 3?

Right. The names of iPhones have been:

iPhone (can you imagine that an iPhone was not 3G capable?)
    iPhone 3G
    iPhone 3GS
    iPhone 4
    iPhone 4S
iPhone 5 (so, actually the 6th iteration)

So there has never been a phone named "iPhone 2" or "iPhone 3".

While the official name for the original iPhone was the iPhone, user over the years have named it the iPhone 2G because it was Edge and not 3G.

Yup, and now we have the iPhone 5S (or 5C depending on who you believe) coming out in a few months.

Some people thing they might even release both. The 5S being the more expensive version and the 5C being the "colored" cheaper version.

    Here is the supposed 5C:

It is not quite the same problem since most iphones do the same things. They all play angry birds the same. Pretty much all games and apps that work on one iphone will work on another. The difference between iphones is more like the difference between a PS3 phat and a PS3 slim.

The Wii U is a brand new console and while it has backward compatibility with the Wii the fact that it is a brand new console and is the only way to play Wii U games is lost on a huge percentage of the population. The Wii had the wii balance board and various other wii peripherals......to many people the Wii U sounds like just another add on to the Wii and the Wii is kind of old and stale in many eyes.

I really like that the Wii U supports all the Wii peripherals, as a consumer I think it is great I can continue to use and get value out of my wiimotes/nunchucks,classic controller/balance board but the casual gamers that made the Wii so successful do not quite get it and the gamepad and asymetric gaming and stuff just do not resonate with them the same as the novelty of the motion controls and wii sports did. Their is nothing compelling them to upgrade to the Wii U even if they did understand what it was....and reality is most of them probably have not played their old Wii in many years so why would they?

I also think the price is an issue. Nintendo is saying they don't think so because the deluxe set has sold much better than the basic set. This is the wrong thinking, people who have bought Wii U are mainly people who were going to buy it no matter what and these people largely felt the deluxe set was the better value. In my eyes the Wii U costs $350 and the basic set is barely a thought. The Ps4 is coming out for $400 soon. Back in the day the choice was a $250 Wii vs a $400-500 360 or PS3 (with not many games). They are going to have to get back to that price differential and not simply by offering a gimped model no one wants if they want to compete. Price is not the only issue though, I never bought a gamecube even though they were cheaper and more powerful back in the day...even when they were $99.

Gimped models I don't understand either. At least when they dropped GBA support on the DS they added features like the camera, sd card, digital store, built in apps with the DSi. With the Wii they dropped gamecube support for almost no reason at all....they reduced the amount of components slightly and did not improve anything...no extra memory or anything. And then they go even further with the Wii Mini.....dumb idea. Make the consoles better and cheaper over time....then dropping BC is not as big a deal....but making them cheaper and crappier over time doesn't make sense to me.

Maybe they should change the name to the Nintendo U......the NU

Nintendo in order to compete, will have to sell their units at a loss to gain market percentage. This is what being a "loss leader" means. As time progresses and proliferation occurs, they will undoubtedly find cheaper ways to produce them. Pretty sure the Wiis were sold at a loss at some point just to get them out there.

Now whether this will pass with the Wii-U, that's another question --- and one that Nintendo should contemplate, otherwise in the long term it will be considered a failed platform regardless of the diehards. The Dreamcast is an excellent example (of the times) when superior hardware doesn't necessarily signify a superior product if it doesn't move out the door.
