A couple months ago I wrote an article speculating on what the price of the Wii U and some of its accessories. Originally I had guessed that the price would be somewhere between $250 and $350. However, at a recent GameStop product conference the details of the Wii U’s release were discussed. At that conference it was announced that the Wii U will be released on November 18th, 2012 for $200.
This price is much lower than what most people (including myself) had speculated. Nintendo had stated on numerous occasions that we would be surprised by the price of the Wii U and that this system would be competitively priced. I will say that this price of $200 makes some sense. Nintendo has been known for dropping the price of a system 6-12 months after the release of that system. They may have just decided to dispense with overpricing their system and pass the savings to us as soon as possible.
I would also like to state that this is merely a rumor. Though it has strong merit coming from GameStop, a company that deals directly with game developers and producers, this information could still prove to be false. There has yet to be an official statement from Nintendo on the price and release date of the Wii U. Also, the GameStop website still does not list a price or release date of the Wii U, even after divulging the information at one of their press conferences.
People may also be worried about the specs and whether or not the Wii U will include all of the features that have been previously reported. There has been no word on Nintendo changing anything that they have already promised with the Wii U, and Nintendo does not like to break any promises they make to their fans. There will be an official statement made by Nintendo about an official price and release date on September 13th, 2012.
