Michael Pachter Suggests That Wii U Could Struggle

On his regular GameTrailers show, Pachter answered a question about whether Wii U would face a similar fate to Dreamcast, an excellent console from SEGA that ultimately failed to achieve sales success. Part of his response was as follows:

I think that if in fact itís a lot like an Xbox 360 in terms of graphics, frame rate and control scheme, then itís probably not going to sell well unless itís priced a lot cheaper, and I donít think theyíre launching the console at $150. So, yeah I think they are about to Dreamcast themselves. I donít think Wii U is going to be as popular as probably Nintendo thinks itís going to be.

Question is, what does Nintendo do next, and I donít know the answer yet. Letís see how Wii U sells, and Iím not going to predict this demise until I know pricing and features. When I know more about it, Iíll offer a better opinion.
We'd suggest that before criticism is levelled at this viewpoint, it should be acknowledged that Pachter does admit that he needs more details to offer a more solid opinion. He also reiterated his belief in this show that Wii U should have been released sooner, perhaps as early as 2009: there's the argument that this console will inevitably be outgunned, in terms of graphical technology at least, within a couple of years of release.

The Wii succeeded with limited hardware but an innovative concept, so do you think Wii U will have to do the same, and if it does will it be able to do so? It's all speculation until full details of the console's capabilities are known, but with two prominent figures in the industry having such different views, its an interesting debate.

He's says if it's "like xbox 360". Haha. Where do you think Microsoft got the idea for Kinect? And last I saw the Xbox 360 didn't have a touchscreen controller. Microsoft fanboy ftw.

i predict decent sells of the wii-u. isn't it already priced at 199? or perhaps that is just a rumor. i'll pay that for their next console most definitely. a lot of 360 and ps3 owners are going to pick up the wii-u wanting to try something different, which the wii-u will definitely offer. im more worried about what microsoft and sony are going to do for their next console.. wiiu seems to have their bases covered with new ideas and intriguing aspects, whereas with ps3 and 360 we've got the same old thing. ohwow cloud gaming? yeah not that big of a deal really. microsoft gonna have to do more then that. sony? just looking at a ps3 makes me yawn.

The price will be $250, it still is a good price IMO. I beleive that was the launch price of the PSP! And that was back in 2005.

Nintendo are not stupid, Wii U will do exceptionally well imo. The biggest fad theses days is the ipad and other tablet devices. Nintendo are joining that area of competition and taking advantage of this fad and taking it to a home console gaming level which people especially current Wii owners will lap up. I think Nintendo have struck gold with this idea, it's current with the gadget market and yet different for the console gaming market.

What's Sony and Microsoft got to offer their next gen, upgraded graphics and downloadable games instead of psychical discs, wow that's desirable. Who want's to sit there and wait for a game they've paid for to download, and with the advanced graphics it'll be like between 30-40gb per game. Very few people have 100mb/p download speed, so your looking at waiting from hours to days for a game to download depending on your broadband. I'd say if you want to move on from discs for games then move to usb sticks, smaller, compact and non of the scratched disc issues.

Your right... they're really stupid! But for reals... I think Wii U will do well. And this is the 7th time I've heard about Dreamcast, it was a failure, sounds like one too...
But what the heck is it?

Please excuse my correct spelling, grammar, or other very smart things.

I agree with you over the download Idea. Total rubbish. Some people with sensitive internet won't be able to download games without ruining everything else. But a USB ising a very great idea either. Maybe back to cartriges? something like an oversized SD card but i'm still thinking those would have a bigger price tag. Stick to BR Discs. I just see these video game consoles just have one Goal: erase the idea of selling used games. Look a EA-(online pass-code)

And if I have to pay for Online, I may kill a Man(that may even be me!)
