You can use Nintendont or Devolution to play GCN games from an HDD. Devolution will require you to verify the games (one time process) using an old Wii, whereas Nintendont doesn't care. Nintendont has generally low compatibility with games, some run well from what I've read but not very many. Devolution has high compatibility with games but as stated will require an old Wii to verify the games before they can be played on Wii U.

You can use either a Wii Classic Controller, Wii Classic Controller Pro, Wii U Pro Controller or PS3 Controller to play games via Devotion. Nintendont works with certain USB controllers.

If I spelled something wrong, I'll just blame it on auto-correct

it has to be verified with an actual genuine GC disc? once verified can that stuff be backed up so if you have to reformat your card or Wii u that you don't have to re-verify every thing again?

Yes it must be the authentic retail disc used to verify. The verification files are stored on the USB or SD card (depending on which medium you use to store the game ISOs), so reformatting the Wii/Wii U should not effect them.

Unfortunately if you had to reformat the device that contains the .dvv (verification) files, you would have to re-verify the games. The verification files, for anti-piracy measures, cannot be copied or alerted in any way. If the original verification file gets deleted/corrupt, replacing it with a copy will do nothing. You will have to reverify the game(s) again.
