Is it possible to use a HDD that is usb powered?

I know that the Wii U doesn't supply enough power, but is there any work-around as of yet? found a hdd for cheap, but not sure if it will work for my wii, wiiu, and computer. eventually the ps4 too!

So tell me --- if a Wii-U inherently doesn't supply adequate mA, just how would there be a miracle for an electrical or design limitation? You can use an externally powered supply or you can try your luck with a "Y" power adapter (with absolutely no guarantee on the latter).
