need help with some questions before buying a wii U

Hi guys. I have never considered buying a wii U but my wii being old and all changed that. I have a few questions that i would greatly appreciate if answered. These are:

1-) can any version of the wii U be softmodded? (i plan on buying a used one and dont know what firmware it'll have)

2-) can i play gamecube games on the wii U?

3-) is the gigantic wii controller thingy with the screen chargable or does it run on batterys just as the wii remotes do?

4-) will i be able to still make use of my wii backups and play them on my softmodded wii U? i believe through neogamma?( i would use neogamma to load my backups on my wii)

5-) would i be able to make backups of my wii U games and play them on my wii U just as i played wii backups on my wii?

Thanks everyone. I'm looking for answers to these questions before actually buying the wii U. One of my sole purposes is to be able to softmod and play homebrew and all that and make backups of my games. I would appreciate the help! If you think there is any other info i need to know about the wii U please, let me know!

    1. The vWii (Virtual Wii) side can be hacked, but you'd need a game with a disc exploit. The Wii-U side itself isn't currently hackable. Look here.

    2. In the works, look here

    3. Rechargeable. In fact, there are third party alternatives now that offer higher capacity (meaning longer play between recharges).

In addition to what Nightstah said I'd like to add that you can use Devolution to play GameCube games on your Wii U (though you still need an older Wii to rip and verify the games...possibly why Nightstah didn't mention it )

And where would you plug the GC controllers?

You don't, you use a classic controller/classic controller pro, a Wii U Pro Controller or a Playstation 3 controller.

ok so im still kinda confused with some things. Would you guys recommend i trade in my softmodded wii to get a wii U? or should i wait a bit longer until the actuall wii U side and all is able to be softmodded. Dont know what to do? my sole purpose right now is to be able to play my wii backups on the wii U which i believe cant be possible from what you guys are saying about this vwii stuff...

It's really up to you but I say, get the Wii U, do the Wii to Wii U data transfer (so your Wii game saves and Shop Channel purchases will carry over to the Wii U), then put the old Wii in a box somewhere (or sell if you want).

And you CAN play Wii backups from a USB drive on Wii U if you hack vWii.

sounds good i guess. this are the last 2 things i noticed which confuse me in the guide:

The HDD used to hold your game backups MUST BE EXTERNALLY POWERED- what is the meaning behind this?

After this mod, if you leave your HDD plugged into the Wii U console, it will prompt you to format the drive every time you power on your Wii U. ALWAYS select Cancel, otherwise you will delete all of your backed up Wii games! - this i also saw in the guide which also scares me which i quite dont understand these two.

and i use dvd-r discs to run my backups. i always wondered where i can get a big flash drive for a cheap price big enough to hold my backups because wii games are 4.37 gigs each

    edit:
cant i just use neogamma to run my backups?

This is a Wii-U and not a Wii. You won't be using a DVD-R on the Wii-U (if you can't on current production Wiis, why in the world would you think you could with a Wii-U?)

Externally powered = AC from the drive enclosure to wall socket. Powering on the Wii with a USB HD tends to make it want to automatically format it. That's why you say "no."

    1) the HDD (hard disc drive) must have an AC adapter that plugs into the wall, the Wii U doesn't supply enough power to run a HDD that only plugs into the USB port.

About the formatting prompt; simply unplug the USB drive from the Wii U's USB port when you turn the system off and don't plug it in again until after the system is on and in vWii (Wii mode).

    2) try amazon.com or your local Walmart, I picked up a 640gb HDD for $50 on sale.

Edit: Neogamma won't work on Wii U because Wii U cannot read burned discs.
