Like the title says, I'm starting to think more about hacking my Wii U's vWii but I'm a little concerned about bricking with one of Nintendo's many forced updates. So what I want to know most is do these updates effect the vWii? I know they're listed as updates to the Wii U (ie the menu and various bug fixes) but do they do anything with the vWii as well?

Ideally I would like to put my old Wii away and have just the Wii U and Xbox 360 hooked up but as Wii U currently can't play GC games that's not practical just yet.

Well, anyway that's all I want to ask. If it's safe to hack the vWii. Thanks for any answers.

A few of us went into this subject in the vWii guide. Have a read there, that's the best I can explain my thoughts on it.

Thanks, I'll have a look at the guide. I'll still probably wait till Wii U can USB load GameCube games (if that ever becomes possible) but I still want to get all the facts I can

Everything right now is pure speculation. No one knows what N will do (if anything) to the vWii part of the Wii U. Brick it on purpose? I suppose its a possibility, but that seems pretty far fetched to me. Nothing in our vWii mod guide changes any of the stock IOS, so any risk of unintentional bricking from an update would seem to be virtually zero.

I will be getting one soon and I am not going to hack it, I would prefer to keep my warranty. Once it's out of warranty I would consider it depending on whats available. I would just keep my Wii for hacking.

If by "dangerous" you mean will it break the vWii, it's unlikely. It does void the warranty the second you download anything to the Wii, though.

I was thinking more along the lines of one of the Wii U's forced updates killing the system itself if it detects the Softmod on the vWii.

I don't think they are allowed to do that. Has any mod on any console ever been bricked by an update? I was under the impression on the wii they simply got rid of your mod and didnt brick you.

if you are worried about that though there is a major update coming soon so you can wait and see if anything happens.

I've heard of people's old Wii's bricking if they used the official update method while soft modded, though I don't know any more specific details than that so it could entirely be a coincidence.
