Anybody Safely Migrated Soft-Modded Wii Data to the Wii U SAFELY.

    Just as the title says.

I know a couple of details about the Wii to Wii U migration process but I was hoping if anybody could give me any advice on SAFELY performing what would be required to get the migration software loaded onto my Wii so I could get the Saves and Virtual console titles and other things off the console onto the vWii. Apparently you need the latest version the Wii System Software to migrate the data as I believe Nintendo pushed an updated system version that just had the migration stuff added too it. The problem is my Wii is System Version 4.2E and soft modded and my gut and education learned from modding the Wii tells me to not update the system or touch certain ISO's related to the System Software.

My Wii details are in my signature if anyone is interested I am willing to plug the old dog back into my TV and get you guys a syscheck dump if you would like one of those.

P.S I have never bothered updating my Wii System Software from what I had when I soft-modded for fear of bricking it so the later guides for soft modding the newer system software versions I don't know anything about.

What you should do is use ModMii to install IOS 62 & Shop Channel 21 (if you don't have these), then go to the Shop Channel and look for the Wii U Transfer Channel (free download). Now I can't confirm if this will be safe or not but I have spoken with a number of people here and on other sites who say they did it and all was fine. I'm told it will not transfer any hack related material (IOSs, custom channels etc etc), nor will it effect your Wii's mod. It will however permanently remove any game save data and purchases you've made in the Shop Channel as well as your points and place them instead on the Wii U (I'm sure you know this already but I'd like to cover all the info I can lol).

Again, I can't personally confirm this so maybe waiting for a 2nd opinion is the best choice before actually doing the transfer. But based off what I've been told there is no risk to it...only reason I've not done it yet is I have no where to leave my Wii U setup and don't want to retire my old Wii until the U is hacked and able to run Devolution with emulated controller and memory card support...I simply can't go without the ability to play my GameCube games

If you want to post a sysCheck that would be good just so we can see whether or not you may already have IOS 62 installed (I'm guessing you don't), but to be a bit more direct to something you said in your post, you do NOT need to update the system menu...all you need is IOS 62 and Shop Channel v21 (SCv21 is how you get the transfer app).

I read something about that somewhere around here, I did not know it was a channel though that migrated it. I could plug in the Wii via component or AV cable and then run Wii U over HDMI like I am currently the Wii U uses game pad so I can migrate using that while using TV for the Wii screen.

So I gather it would not copy channels and ISO's but what about Virtual console games and other things like that on the SD card such as save games for use on the vWii. I have saves and virtual console games that appear on the vWii but when I try to open them it says " This is not for this system" Which I can only assume is the same thing that happens on the Wii like when you try to move a save-game to another console with out homebrew and priiloader to unlock the files.

I thought that the migration function on Wii and Wii U was intended to move the saves,Mii's & the installed Virtual and Wii ware titles over to the Wii U, but I think is that what you meant by saying these things will no longer be on the Wii and instead on the Wii U.

Hmm, I'm not sure about the channels and saves stored on a SD card...I think you'd have to copy them to the Wii's internal NAND in order to copy them over.

And yeah, anything you transfer from the old Wii will no longer be usable on the old Wii U, from that point on it becomes for use on the Wii U only.

I've been down this road and here is what I found.

The transfer process would begin and fail all the time. I finally got it to transfer my characters and game saves only after going through all my game saves and having to delete any saves that were greyed out. I did this under the data management for the wii first. It's true once your characters have made the transfer journey from your wii to the wii (u) they will be gone. Thanks Nintendo for not letting us keep our characters and game saves on our original wii.

If you would still like to have all your wii characters and everything else intact I suggest you make a NAND backup of your system and then restore back afterwards. I don't have have all the details for restoring a NAND backup but I'm sure someone else can add their two cents here. In summary I now have my wii and wiiu with all Mii's and some of the game saves on the wiiu plus my wii is completely back the way it was before it was transferred. 😏

    Hope it helps you out.

Hmm this whole ordeal sounds like a chore just to get a couple saves and Wii ware off the console to the vWii, I don't care about the Mii's as I re made them all on the Wii U the day I got it. The NAND I have never ever touched in the past as my Wii is of the kind without the option to install as Boot2 so I never felt like going to that length as recovering a NAND is likely just going to brick the console when I try and install the NAND again. Boot would mean I could have just had the modded install as Boot2 and Copied the NAND of boot 2 back and no harm done if it bricks in Boot2 no harm done but it was not worth the risk on a non Boot 2 install.

I think at this point I am just better off waiting until vWii hacks mature to the extent of the Wii and I will just use the same style of homebrew that unlocked Wad installs and Save Games and then I will just use those to install the Virtual and Wiiware titles I extracted and backed up to wad files and stored on my HDD for safe keeping onto the vWii so they install tied to the console rather then try and migrate them over.

I am pretty sure a bright spark will create homebrew to convert SD data from Wii to vWii usable in no time after it is possible to do so.

Sorry to go offtopic, but the new Wii U comes with 32Gb onboard memory? Man... must have been out of the scene for too long. One would imagine they would patch up the holes for transferring the mods and hacks from the Wii to the vWii...

32gb with the deluxe/premium black version, 8gb with the standard white version. After the Wii U has updated to the day one patch the black version is left with 25gb meaning the white users would have around 3gb left of remaining space give or take. USB storage for them would basically be a necessity if they were to download games from the online shop. I only have my Wii External storage drive connected for future HomeBrew hacks, however my SD card that I transferred from the Wii to the Wii U is in my sig and it is also 8gb which is more than what the Wii has for internal storage and the same amount that the White Wii U has in total. I have all the WiiWare and VirtualConsole titles for the Wii on the SD card because the Wii does not have enough free blocks to store the save games and all of the WiiWare if I was to use the migration method I would need to move the titles from the SD card to the Wii internal storage in lots of 5 or 6 and repeat until all of it was transferred, but if I just wait until the vWii is fully hacked and stable I can just update the SD card with what ever apps I need to upgrade and shove the card back into the Wii too transfer the Saves that are on the NAND to the SD then put the SD back into the Wii U and boot up Wii Mode and it will just work without having to transfer anything.

I may transfer all the saves to the vWii NAND because why not and just use the SD for what the homebrew apps and WiiWare. So you see patience would be my best and most efficient option the only thing I am not sure about is how I am going to stop the Wii U from wanting to format the USB device when it finally can run backups from USB I suppose I would need to use another one of my external drives one for the vWii backups and one for the Wii U mode or I could just split the drive I have into two partitions and just install the games to USB I would actually play and keep the rest in my collection.

If I did this I would probably only partition 250gb for the vWii enough for the must have titles and reserve the rest for Wii U games because they will end up being anywhere between 2gb - 20gb in size and that is only if we get the option to scrub during the install so that it stores only the game files otherwise each and every game will take up around 25gb because the discs are essentially blue-ray that can hold around 25gb of data. If the later is the case I should only reserve 150gb for the vWii.

I had Wii Shop v21 installed with the new IOS and performed a Wii -> Wii U transfer without any problems. All Miis, game save data, and WiiWare/VC channels in the NAND gets copied to SD and then copied back off into the Wii U. All Wii Shop purchase data and remaining points is sent along too, so any WiiWare/VC stored in SD channel will be moved over as well so you can redownload the games for no additional charge. Any .WAD installed channels in system memory or SD channel will not be copied over.

After this has taken place, you won't be able to play the games on your Wii anymore, as the rights to play them has been moved, so any games still in SD will show up, but not be playable.

Those legitimate purchased thave have been moved to the Wii U, when Wii U VC launches this spring, will let you rebuy the game if you choose for $1 for NES or $1.50 for SNES games that you've already bought once on the Wii. If you didn't buy the game on the wii , or didn't migrate your data over, then you'll have to pay the full price ($5 or $8 respectively) for the games. So if you have a lot of purchased WiiWare/VC, it would be a good idea to get them moved over. Once the Wii U versions come out, you can then play them on the gamepad.

(From now until July, they will have one game per month for 30 cents for 30 days in the Wii U eShop. This month is Balloon Fight).

Hmm, Well the legit WiiWare is on a console that I gave away as I had a White Wii that was soft modded so I Soft modded the one I gave to a family member to so that I could use the homebrew hacks to bypass the ownership permissions which I then could copy the wad files of the titles to an SD and move them to my other console it beat buying them twice.

If as you say the migration method will not copy the titles that were installed from wads and not from the Nintendo store then I will have no choice but to wait for the same hacks to come to vWii so that the permissions are relaxed letting me simply re install the games from the wad files I originally backed them up as. I don't want to migrate from the other console if it is going to remove all that data as It is no longer used by me and my family member will need its data for the Wii Fit and other like titles that rely on the Mii's to exist as well as the save games. Granted I probably could just copy the saves from that Wii over to an SD and put them back on after but the Mii's I cannot replace.

But I think you just said that the Wii titles would be copied over just not the .wad installed channels which I am not worried about as they are all homebrew channels for things like media player and emulator homebrew.

I think I will need to have a think about it so I can work out a way to migrate without effecting the two consoles I don't want one to be stripped of its contents just to migrate the data over and I have no need for the Mii's on the existing console I own I only want the WiiWare and the Saves migrated and I know for a fact I can do that without using the migration tool if I just wait a bit longer.

P.S I am an android user which relates to my way of thinking here because I don't agree with how Nintendo like Apple lock the content to a single device. If I own something I want to use it, Just like how Steam is not going remove a game on my desktop just because I also install it on my laptop.
