If I use an HD that's not externally powered but connected to an USB Hub that is externally powered, will it work the same?

I have a question about the hard drives as well. I know the guide says you must use an externally powered HDD, but I don't have one. So for the heck of it I tried the HDD I used in my Wii, and it seems to work fine. However, so far I've played two separate games off of it (one GameCube via Devolution, and one Wii game), and both times after 10-15 minutes of play, the console would stop reading input, but would act like I was still pressing whatever buttons I was pressing when it happened. I hope that makes sense. Anyway, I can't do anything at that point except disconnect the Wii U from power, as nothing provokes any response from the Wii U.

    My question is a two-parter:
    1. Is this expected behavior of a non-externally powered HDD (as opposed to it not being recognized at all)?
    2. If not, help pl0x. I guess to make this one a question, I'll reword it: how can I fix it? Thanks!

EDIT: I use USB Loader GX, the version that is currently linked in the Devolution guide. Not sure if that matters, but I figure the more information I can supply the better. Also, I just modded the vWii today, so all the cIOS and Homebrew Channel should be up to date. Also again, I have been using the Aspect Ratio fix as well.

It works with the latest update (5.0) just follow the instructions that cjizzle left and install, this guide is awesome! If you have and external hard drive (laptop) that dosen't have a external power source, look for a USB Y Cable for External Hard Drive and it will help out with the power issue. And to stop the Wii U from asking you to format the hard drive in Wii U mode look for UStealth. And even though cjizzle said dont install any forwarders, there are forwarders that will fix the aspect issue, you just have to search for it and DO RESEARCH.

There is a aspect fix app that can be launched from the HBC. No forwarder is needed. Said app is linked in the guide.

If I spelled something wrong, I'll just blame it on auto-correct

i feel like such a scrub for asking, but what port does the USB cable go into on the wiiu for your external hard drive of wii games? yes mines powered, but this drive is... weird... it worked well with the wii but not sure if it will with the wiiu.

if i remember correctly, the usb drive should plug into one of the front ports, correct?

I did a quick search of the thread (using usb port as keywords) and got your answer:

The only thing I want to do on the vWii is to be able to connect to the Wiimmfi custom servers now that the Nintendo servers are down which the only way to do that is to softmod my vWii. I've always been worried about softmodding any console in fear that it will somehow affect my normal playing and potentially ban me or otherwise ruin my normal everyday use. So before I begin, I just have a few questions to put my mind at ease.

When I softmod the vWii on my Wii U, does it have any affect on the Wii U side. Like say I softmod my vWii and then go about playing my Wii U games as normal like playing games online, doing stuff in the MiiVerse and buying/download stuff in the Wii U store. Is there anyway for Nintendo to know that my vWii is softmodded and will it in anyway affect the things I do on the Wii U? Also, is there a chance that future updates to the Wii U will either overwrite my vWii softmod or prevent me from re-softmodding my vWii in the future. Thanks in advance for your help.
