Would it be possible to use an externally powered USB hub for my hard drive rather than purchasing a new external HDD?

I hope you actually read the guide pertaining to USB HDs (like how on the Wii-U it absolutely requires an external power source).

While they "should be" backwards compatible, we've seen situations with Wii softmodding that shows this isn't always the case.

Is your hard drive externally powered? or is it only connected to the USB expecting to draw enough power from the port to run?

If the latter, the Wii U's USB ports do not output enough power to properly run a hard drive by itself. You have to use an externally powered hard drive.

If you are getting that message, you aren't following this guide correctly. Nothing in this guide requires an ios downgrade. In fact, it doesn't do anything at all to your stock IOS. You must have other junk on the SD card, of which would have been removed had you formatted your card as instructed in this guide at the beginning...

Has anyone had any issues with the newest update 4.0.3? I haven't soft-modded my Wii-U yet because I am worried an Update can mess up my system? Can anyone put my worries to rest?

Update: Went ahead with the mod, works flawlessly, great guide! Thank you!

Also, for curiosities sake, I was reading on another site that they have a way of backing up the nand from the vWii. I haven't personally done it and I won't until it gets posted on this site in this guide, but is there a reason that it hasn't made it to this guide yet?
