No one is playing Super Mario 3D World!

Itís not shocking that Super Mario 3D World is performing below expecations given the meager install base of the Wii U, plus new consoles from Microsoft and Sony releasing in the same time frame. Despite the doom and gloom thatís been surrounding Nintendo in the media, Nintendo is not in bad shape as whole. The 3DS is performing well and 2013 has proved to be one of the best years ever for a Nintendo platform. All in all, Nintendo is still a profitable company.

Still, to see a flagship Mario title end up a commercial flop is hard to stomach. Itís never happened before, at least not in terms of traditional releases (Iíve not accounted for re-releases). Take a look at the sales chart below which tracks sales of every core game in the Mario series starting from the original game on the NES:

Thanks to hardware bundles, Super Mario Bros. U managed to garner over two million in sales. Standing on its own, 3D World has moved less than half a million units worldwide since its release nearly a month ago. Itís very possible that Nintendo could announce a significant price drop on the Wii U and include 3D World as part of a bundle, which would undoubtedly generate a spike in sales. As it stands, and as someone who has been playing Mario games since the days of the NES, itís a bit alarming to see a Mario game going mostly unnoticed within the wider community.

There are plenty of people calling for Nintendo to exit the hardware business (at least console hardware, not necessarily portables) and focus solely on developing games. Even though I hated the Wii last generation, I was never behind the ďexitĒ argument because I still felt that there was a place in the world for a Nintendo console. I love that Nintendoís underlying philosophy is about making games that anyone, regardless of what demographic theyíre a part of, can enjoy and have fun with.

But looking at the numbers, itís plain to see that things are different now. Even though the Nintendo 64 got its ass kicked by the PlayStation, and the GameCube got trounced by the Xbox and PS2, people still flocked to the new Mario games in droves. In the case of Super Mario 3D World, the industry is the largest its ever been, with millions of new people playing video games compared to just five years ago, and yet itís the worst selling game in the series (again, things may pick up if Nintendo uses a hardware price drop/bundle strategy).

I want more people to play Super Mario 3D World. Itís a brilliant, imaginative game that deserves to be experienced by the masses. The question is, what will it take to make that happen?

It looks like an awesome game, the only reason I don't have it yet is because I have a personal "stigma" (for lack of a better word). After Thanksgiving I don't buy anything for myself, that way there people don't have to buy something knew for me only to find out "damn, I didn't know you already had it."

I can't wait to get it. I know everyone's forecasting the Wii U will end up be scrapped and that Nintendo will stop making home consoles but I don't see that happening even if the Wii U does end up being a flop. The GameCube was deemed unsuccessful but they still made the Wii.

The Wii U probably won't sell nearly as well as Nintendo hoped (unless they can come up with some ace in the hole to turn it's sales around) but I think it'll still perform good enough for them to continue making home consoles.

This is my game of the year.

Note than Mario 1 with 40M units is due to the fact that almost every NES sold came with it (like Wii Sports did in regions outside of Japan).

This game is a system seller. After another price drop, and especially bundling this game with it, will bring more people in. Plus this game should have a long tail like Mario Kart and Smash Bros usually do. The more units that sell, the more game will likely go with it.

The big issue is getting units out the door.

Maybe N is going the way of Microsoft and alternating killer/filler hardware?

I do think they should drop the GCN platform, though. It's the third console already. Maybe new hardware will come with new paradigms.

My family has stopped buying me videogames because of that. They are just like, "He knows the games he wants. He'll buy it himself." This also stems from the fact that I am pretty much the only child out of a family of 80 cousins who has a clue about and interest in videogames. And they therefore stick to buying things that I am clueless about, like fashionable clothes and shoes.

I'm sure Nintendo will pull itself out of the gutter somehow, but there needs to be a critical and probably condescending and humiliating talk up in their headquarters so that they don't let their fans down. As long as I get my Nintendo-only games, even if the Wii U flops, it was worth it for me. But I must say that I have never seen Nintendo act so stupidly in marketing. Even my friends who are interested in buying a Wii U still think it is an accessory to the Wii! People who are buying it don't even know what it is! Roll out the Gamecube 2 and I'll buy 10 for myself!
