They enable you to play backup dics through your wii dvd drive. They are generally not preferred, as USB-loading is much easier, simpler, and often cheaper. Check out some of the softmod guides on this forum or other forums, or google search modmii.

In my opinion, there are no benefits of having a chip over a softmod.
But modchips, and softmods can work quite well together.

An auto-booting modchip can help you unbrick your Wii. Some hardmods also allow you to play GameCube backups from a USB drive. Other than that, a softmod is the way to go.

hermes is all the way up to rev 5 now, and waninkoko is at rev 21. and there's another based on waninkoko called d2x, which is at v7. These offer much more than they did a year or so ago. Almost 100% game compatibility, no lag, dlc support, quick loading times, etc. Plus the ability to load a game with the click of a button, without having to worry about scratching discs, losing discs, or getting up and changing them.

Believe the people posting, softmod is the way to go - because it works

edit - just saw the last part of your post. I guess there's modchips that support gc loading from usb. I always thought those were generally buggy and lacked support for most titles, but if someone can get you a link for that modchip, go right ahead.

haha man I'm slow today, I didn't even notice the "downloads" part. Yeah really dude, go to a local game stop or something, gamecube games only cost a few bucks now anyways.
