Lost on how to modify my wii

Good morning, and thank you in advance for any direction and help.
    I am new to this.

Stumbled upon this forum trying to decipher what or how to modify my child's wii to run image files from a USB Laptop HDD I have plugged into the back.

At one point a friend of mine was able to help me do some sort of software modification to the wii and for a few months I was able to play the image files (wbfs) from a usb laptop hard drive I have plugged into the back. Long story short, I had issues with the optical drive, Nintendo refused to work on it since I had 'Homebrew' installed on the machine, and I ended up going out and replacing the optical drive myself.

The unit has been working fine, but in that time I had also re-imaged(?) the firmware of the wii, and since then the HDD backups on my USB drive no longer work.

I am looking for a solution that will do the following:

1.) allow me to make backups of the disks we have (small children = damaged disks)
2.) play those images from a USB external drive plugged into the back of the console.
3.) load and play image files (.iso? .wbfs?) from that USB HDD

Am I crazy? Is this even possible?

I was hoping for a hardware piece I could plug into the unit, but am willing to do this via software programming if necessary.

Background: I run an IT computer company and have 20 years of computer hardware/software production/networking as a background. I am quite technical, but when it comes to these consoles, I am in the dark.

I know that the optical drive I replaced in the unit is much newer than the original (I replaced it about 9 months ago, using a current WII console off the shelf). So if I need to, I can certainly take it apart and get any numbers off the optical drive if they will be needed (again, the serial on the bottom of my unit represents the actual wii, but the optical drive inside is newer by at least a year+, if this makes any difference - I do not know).

I would appreciate any direction in how to approach this. There is a homebrew app still installed on the wii, I don't know what may be missing or what I may have screwed up when I went and re-loaded the firmware (4.3?), and if I have posted this in the wrong forum, my apologies, please move it to the more appropriate location.

Again, I would love to do this with something hardware, but not knowing much about this, I don't know if that is the best solution for this particular application. thank you all again for your time and any help, I look forward to doing this, just need to know where and how to start.

Follow the Any wii guide in my signatuure and then the Fat32 guide for you HDD and all will be well.. you probably wont be able to play dvds or back up discs because of the new drive.

You screwed up by updating to 4.3. It crushed and crippled your softmod. Never ever accept a Nintendo update for any reason because they all have various means in there to destroy homebrew and backup loading. You'll have to re-softmod your Wii (Softmod any Wii guide recommended) and seeing as how you updated to 4.3 you will need one of the few specific games on the list because there is no way around a game exploit for SM 4.3.

Thank you for the quick replies.

I realize that I may have broken the unit by updating to the latest firmware (my hopes were that it was going to make the machine 'clean' so I could send it in to have the optical drive replaced by Nintendo. But when they found the Homebrew on there, they refused to do any work on it, hence then, me doing my own replacement of the optical drive.

Since my original post here, I have been doing some reading on the WODE. And from what I can tell, this is the only unit that I could use that would do what I want?

1.) It will work with my existing hardware, allowing my son to still play the games we have on retail disks (optical drive is still workable)

2.) It will allow me to make backups of my disks in either .iso or .wbsf and put them on an external USB HDD, and then run those directly from there.

3.) not effected by any future firmware updates to the WII if they happen, and do not require me to do any software coding/modification to the actual firmware to make it work.

Has anyone had any experience with the WODE? With my 'requirements' am I correct in thinking that this is the only unit that is going to fully do the things I want it to do?

Again, I really appreciate all yours' time. Thank you in advance for the help and direction provided.

the soft mod guide suggested will do all the same.. if you follow the guide to a "T" and use priiloader, you will be fine. but it's up to you. if you read through the forum there are still quite a few hard modded wii's getting additional soft mods..

    Outstanding!

I am more than happy to do this via software, if my WII has been updated to the latest firmware, am I going to run into any problems using this guide? We have a bunch of games we bought via the WII shop channel (old games from when I was a boy like Galaga, ect), and I don't want to lose those. They reside on an SD card in the Wii. Will I lose these (opportunity cost, I guess, and I am ok with it if needed)

Being as I may have partial code or modifications done from the original setup when I put in HomeBrew and some of the ancillary 'loader' programs that I did to get this thing to run HDD WBFS games on an external HDD (and I can't remember them all but I think some of that stuff is still partially hanging out there), is there a way, or should I attempt to 'format' my WII? Can I somehow get this back to a factory-fresh environment, so I know that the softmod in your sig file above, when I start it, I am sure that I am actually starting from the beginning, and not breaking anything else?

I can certainly check firmware revisions/homebrew app names/ect if this would help you better understand what I currently have setup. Again, the goal being I am able to run .ISO or .WBFS files directly off an external laptop USB HDD.

Any supporting information I can provide to you, I will gladly do. Please let me know if there is anything that would better help you help me make sure we are on the same page.

Again, I want to thank you all for your time, I realize I am quite a n00b when it comes to this. I have the computer background, just not the console background, and for your patience, I am certainly grateful.

    Thank you again

    **EDIT**

and seeing as how you updated to 4.3 you will need one of the few specific games on the list because there is no way around a game exploit for SM 4.3.
Can you expand on this? I am unsure what this means?

    Thank you again.

No, but you can always re-download them from the shop channel

No, just redo the softmod, as it will overwrite everything there and be just fine

As Desp said DO NOT FORMAT THE WII. Just follow the guide to a T.

your wiware will be deleted if you use the sd sd card for the soft mod because you will need to format the sd. either get a new sd (not SDHC) for the softmod or back up the contents.

    Outstanding!

I have many many SD cards (being in the industry I am in) so that is not an issue. I can format one of a handful of those SD cards and use it for this purpose.

If the softmod I did way back when, if any of that is still out there (in the WII somewhere), you are telling me that I need not worry about it? If so, that is great.

Question pertaining to the SD card. Once it is formatted and has the loading software on it, and all this 'mod' is done....can I put those downloaded games from the wii-shop channel ON that same SD card? or do I need to leave that SD card alone and use it only for the softmod software?

second question, pertaining to the actual mod once it is done:

the catalyst for wanting to do this is the fact that my children are mavens with Sharpie Pens. And I have had 2 disks ruined due to their Picasso-antics. I have found those games in an .iso format on the 'net, and I wanted to also know, that once I have done this modification, am I able to get ahold of one of those backups to replace my damaged disks? Would I be able to put that .ISO on the external HDD and have it work?

Nintendo has refused to replace those disks because they are not manufacture-defects. And they are games that my oldest really loved (Lego StarWars and Lego Batman). This is the reason why this conversation has taken place in the first place. Not wanting to go out and re-buy those disks, but be able to run a pulled .ISO off that HDD, and then for future, back up the exisiting disks we have so I no longer have to worry about the stray 3yr old and a sharpie pen.

Final Note: This software mod, it will not effect the ability for my boy to put a disk into the Wii and play it right? He gets Wii games as gifts from time to time, and I certainly don't want to disable the optical drive in trade for doing this modification.

Thank you again for your time, I am going to run out with the 3yr old on a couple errands, back in a couple hours and will respond to any inquiries.

If you own the original then it's NOT piracy.. But to play on HDD it needs to be converted to .wnfs format. you can use wbfs manager for that. there are a few other apps but you'll have to search for that.

Thats sad.. those 2 games are on the list of games that you can use to hack your 4.3 wii... the guide suggested will inform you on what games will work to hack your wii.. for 4.3 wii's a game exploit is needed. there is NO WAY AROUND IT... YOU HAVE TO USE A GAME EXPLOIT.
Final Note: This software mod, it will not effect the ability for my boy to put a disk into the Wii and play it right? He gets Wii games as gifts from time to time, and I certainly don't want to disable the optical drive in trade for doing this modification.
If you follow the guide to a "T" then no it will be fine and the original disc channel will work fine.
