    How to Change Your Wii DVD PCB Guide

    To follow this guide your console should already be open and your DVD drive removed, you can follow our 'How to Open your Wii' Guide to get to this stage.

    Equipment you will need:

    Replacement Wii DVD PCB Available Here *Click*


    Small Philips (Crosshead) Screwdriver

    Soldering Iron (ideally 15-18 watt) with small bit


    Tweezers/needle nose pliers



    Optional:

    Solder - You may find that you need to add some extra solder to the pads on the replacement PCB to allow the wires to be securely attached.

    Desoldering Wick/Pump - If you are inexperienced with soldering or just make a mistake you may find that you need to remove some excess solder.

    The first step is to fully remove the DVD drive from the Wii console, our 'How to Open the Wii' Guide shows you how to do this. The drive shown in the picture is a drive that has the D3-2 chipset which is incompatible with the Drive Key from standard; the red arrow points to the drive controller which if it is a D3-2 will be blank with no writing, this is how you can identify if you have a D3-2 DVD drive or not. Older drives which are compatible with the Drive Key from standard will have writing on this chip and also in cases more than one large chip were as in the case of the D3-2 chipset there is only one.

    The next step is to desolder the wires indicated in the image above. It is best to desolder the wires first before unplugging the cables as they can get in the way, likewise, it is best to keep the board screwed in while soldering to prevent any movement of the board and any potential accidents.

    To desolder the wires, hold the wire with your pliers/tweezers just below where the wire is soldered to the board/pad, then, apply the soldering iron for a short while until the solder melts. Gently pull the wire a short distance away from the board until the solder solidifies to prevent it from rejoining. After doing this for all the wires indicated you should end up with a board which looks similar to the one below.

    With the required wires desoldered you can now proceed to unplug the cables from the board and remove the screws. It is best to remove the cables before the screw, as doing otherwise will result in the board moving about making them harder to remove.

    The cables that need to be unplugged are circled in red, for the two larger cables on the right this is a case of opening the connector by sliding the two pieces of plastic on the side of the connectors forward and pulling the cable from the connector, extra attention and care should be taken when removing the large flat orange cable as it is delicate and can be easily damaged. The small cable to the left can simply be pulled out of the connector.

    The two screws which need to be removed are circled in yellow, these require a small philips (crosshead) screwdriver.

    Once all the cables and screws are removed the board can be removed from the drive be lifting slightly from the right (side where large orange cable connects)and pulling upwards.

    Having followed the previous steps and removed the PCB your drive should look similar to the image above.



    Your replacement DVD PCB can be fitted in to your DVD drive by doing the opposite of how you took it out. First align the notch on the left of the PCB, circled in red in the image above, with the black piece of plastic which slots in to it while having the right side of the PCB raised, the black plastic should slot in to the notch on the PCB, it can then be lowered in to place.

    Note: You should try and ensure all the wires and cables are above/on top of the board rather than beneath it when putting it in to place as it can be hard to remove them from under the board once in place and may damage them.

    All that remains is to replace the two screws that were removed earlier, reinsert the cables and solder the wires to the replacement board.

    Replacing the screws is a simple case of doing the opposite of what was done earlier, likewise is reinserting the cables. With the two cables on the right with the connectors that need to be opened before inserting the cable it may seem when trying to insert the cable that they will not fit in the 'base' of the connector, this is normal, they fit in to the connector above the plastic retainer that secures/closes it.

    Once the screws and have been replaced the cables reinserted, the last step is to solder the wires. To do this, again like previously hold the wire you are going to solder just below the bare wire, on the plastic covering. Hold the wire up to the pad so that they are touching and hold the soldering iron against the wires, once the solder melts, remove the soldering iron but hold the wire in place until the solder fully solidifies to prevent the cable coming loose. The same should be done for all the remaining wires, all being soldered in to the same place they were removed from, if you cannot remember the order refer to the pictures of the wires in place.


    Note: it may be necessary to add more solder to the pads on the board if the wires do not bond or are only partially covered in solder. To do this simply place the length of solder against the pad and hold the soldering iron against it for a brief moment, the solder will melt and flow on to the pad. Ensure you do not add too much solder by holding the iron and solder length in place too long, if you do any excess can be removed with solder wick or a soldering pump.




    If all went well your DVD drive PCB will look similar to the one above with the replacement board in place and fully fitted.
