Ca Advice needed with WII with old D2CKEY chip

Hi Guys , I have a wii that I mode few years ago with a D2CKEY chip that has never been updated or connected online for simply p[laying backups , now my son is trying to play some newer games and having issues with disks asking him to update, I Have never let him update from Nintendo, so he is asking me to get him up and running.

    few of the facts

    D2CKEY
    3.4U

I beleive that I need or should upgrade to 4.1, and use homebrew channel to install updates that are needed to play each game.

since I have not been paying attention or even in the wii hack game for a while can some one offer advice of best route to take and what I should do

should I replace my hard modded D2CKEY chip with a new more current chip (Or softmod)

When I start to try to install Home brew My wii would not read files from sd card ?? think that there wass a post regarding the way files are installed on sd card somewhere ?? can some one help with this ??

    thanks for help in advance

    Ragweed

Im not an expert or anything but a few things you could try quickly...fyi i use the d2pro9 w/Wiiclip

    1) try to update your d2ckey via a dvd/cd update found online. if there's an update menu, turn on update blocking- maybe there now
    2) try burning scrubbed iso's with the update partition removed.
3)Last resort-You could update your Wii - latest is 4.3 but im pretty sure you'll lose region free with anything above 4.1 (just burn ntsc games and its not a issue really).

Those are just hardmod based ideas, thats all I use and can play the large majority of titles out there...i dont mess with softmods personally, but I know there are options there for you too....hope thats helps some

Do NOT update to 4.3! That won't solve anything, just make things worse. All you need to do is block updates with Priiloader and update your IOS's with thg guide in my sig.

I think I'm in the same boat as Ragweed. Honestly, this wii hacking has gotten pretty intense now, and things look way more complicated than when I did a hardmod fix with the D2CKEY two years ago... Could someone recommend the steps that I need to take?
As by updating all the IOS's in the guide seems to have many pre-requisites...

    eg.

    • Bootmii as IOS/boot2 with a NAND backup
    • Priiloader+hacks (to block online/disc updates)
    • The Homebrew Channel
    • An SD card that is at least 56MB. No micro or SDHC. Sandisk is recommended for best compatibility.
    • Patched IOS36. If you don't have this follow the "Install & Patch IOS36" section from this guide.

Do I really need to do all these things if I have a hardmod?

Also is there a certain version I should stick to .. ie v4.1?

    Thanks in advance..

Bootmii + a NAND backup is somthing you should have for brick protection. As long as you have that, only a hardware failure can brick your Wii beyond repair. The others are necessary for completing the guide.

I designed that guide for those who have followed a softmodding guide. If you follow almost any guide on this site, everything required will be installed. It would be possible for you install the IOS's without the HBC, but it would be harder, plus you couldn't use my guide.

4.1 is considered the best menu to have. Some people prefer older ones (personal preference, nothing else), but versions beyond that only make modding harder.

Thanks for the advice... I'll start googling and reading up on all the guides. I've got a few more final questions... (sorry for being such a noob) but..

    1. Is there a prefrered order on which things to do?
    2. I also wanted to put games/apps to run off a harddrive in the future... could you point me in the right direction to do that?

No need to apologize. Everyone was a newbie once (except me ).
I suggest you follow this guide. It is a bit long, but it covers just about every softmod possible. The brick protection is ridiculous. It will give you everything you need to follow my guide, as well as one for USB backups. Everything is set in a good order too.

Buy a 2GB official Nintendo SD card from just about anywhere that sells video games. They cost about $10 and will work with all homebrew.
