Will any mod chips work with GC2-D4?

    Newboobie here.

I just picked up a black Wii and opened up and based on the Wiidrives.com website pictures I have a GC2-D4 chip. (there is no writing on the chip).

When I am searching I am not finding much about this GC2-D4 chip. Can anyone tell me where to find accurate info about whether hard modding will work? Or is possible yet?

    Or can I softmod?

    Any help will be appreciated.

far as I know, D3-2 and D4 drives can't read burned games...

If I softmod the patch can I use a HDD with it? Or is it easier just to soft mod the machine in my case since I cant use discs?

it's easier and economically justified to soft mod the machine in your case.

What did you choose??? softmod or mod chip? I am exactly in your situation and I still haven't decided yet... Personally I prefer flatmod fusion but I'm not convinced that it will work on these new drives...

    Hi Cile,

Are you sure the sundriver works with D4? I'm seeing the latest version that they support being D3-2 from wiidrives.com but it may support all versions. I was thinking about grabbing the Wiikey Fusion but I like the HDD loading feature better than the SD loading...if sundriver works, that would be perfect b/c a 500GB Sata HDD is the same price as a 32GB SD Card...SD route seems pointless...can't load that many games. Are there any other options? Can't seem to find any

D3-2 and D4 are pretty much the same in that you can't play backups on them; the D4 is significantly smaller (the PCB) than D3-2. Sundriver I believe replaces your optical drive with a HD and a work-around to not require the optical drive (I think; it's been awhile since I looked into it). You're right that a HD --- whether softmod/USB HD or WODE/Sundriver would give you greater flexibility and better bang for the buck in comparison to SD Cards.
