    Modchip Help Please

I bought my wife a wii because I'm leaving in November for Air Force boot camp. I found a modchip that does exactly what I want, but I wanted to get some views from other people. Also. I was told that if you install a modchip in the Wii, Nintendo will find it through their updates and not allow you to use the online store. Is this true?

This is the Modchip I was thinking about installing DriveKey install + Wii Mod Chip DriveKey

I can recommend softmodding instead of a modchip.
My old chip is still in the wii but pretty much useless.
I know you already made up your mind what you want to do etc. but it sounds like running backups and this can be done
for free (best plus on the softmodding)
no need to open up your console (already done that? a triwingscrewdriver around?)
have the whole game collection on a usb harddrive (if available)
you can still use discs of course
and with even more options to go for.
run DVDs, .mp3s, .avi, radio live streams, youtube, virtualconsole stuff/emulators etc., sooner or later you/your girl maybe want something of that

Have a look at the softmod any wii guide (link below) and stick to the route which suits your wii systemmenuversion (-->wiisettings->top right corner)
takes about 100Minutes to read but only 20 to get it running.
    --> Fully enabled wii

good luck, what ever modding route you take

edit: later updates will make things harder for you either hard or softmodding, but with softmodding you will be able to block any update action (most chips should have that too). using the shop or other online content/activities is not firmwareversion dependend

Dude you are good! My only problem is I'm scared to softmod. I have 4.3U. Are you sure I can do this without bricking my wii?

So with 4.3 you will need a lego indiana jones or super smash bros brawl retail game to start (+ required 2Gb SD card (no sdhc or mini card with adapter)), see the guide.
the chance to brick your wii is really low if you follow the guide step by step. it covers everything what could cause problems

    also have a look here
    Identify your Wii
put in your wii serial No. (sticker on the wii back) and see whats inside. if you got a d3-v2 or d4 chip on your wii drive, you won't be able to run burned discs, no matter if soft-/or hardmod.

hm yes, its likely, when you bought it after beginning of 2009.
you can only say by trying or opening the wii.
much better way to mod go for usb loading
get one of those drives here
    USB Drive Compatibility List

maybe check the introduction section, say hello and get a compact link pack to stuff on the site here

So I still need to go through the whole softmod list and do all the steps to be able to play back ups off my portable usb hard drive?

Vinatec is right. I would also like to add that once your Wii has Bootmii and/or Priiloader installed (which is part of the guide), it is arguably safer than before you softmodded it. Even if you do hardmod it, I would still recommend softmodding in case Nintendo releases another 4.2-like update, which could brick your Wii.
