    Hook a Noobie up!

All of you are amazing. I have been reading this forum for a few days now, on and off over the past couple months and this is one of the most purely helpful forums I've ever come across. There are some really good, honest folks here and I sincerely appreciate it. With that being said I have probably the most classic and cliche nuub question out there. "What chip should I get?" I put in my serial number through the two places that are most commonly linked on this forum and one says a 50/50 shot at a D2C and the other says a 75% chance at a D2E. My serial number is LU350922XXX. The last three "X"'s are real numbers but I'm always paranoid of putting the exact number out there in case the man is watching, LMAO. Anyhow, I'm fairly certain it is a D2E since I purchased it this past August (2008.) My goal is to play backups, US versions only. I believe this would be NTSC if I am not mistaken. I may have an interest in Gamecube games in the future but my primary focus is Wii games, obviously. I will also be looking into a USB Gecko to load up my SNES and Genesis ROMs. Nevertheless...I am conflicted on which chip is right for my Wii. I am thinking about the D2Sun V3. I have read that this is a perfectly good chip. The factors that matter most to me are; being upgradable via either USB or DVD, and not having to open up the Wii too often, if ever, after the initial install. Most people ask if the Wasabi V3 or the D2Pro9 V3 is the right chip and some say the D2Sun is a "economy buy." I don't have any real interest in "Homebrew" software since I am not that tech-savvy, I just want to play straight up Wii games pretty much. Is the D2Sun V3 a solid choice? Should I spring for a Wasabi or D2Pro9? Does it matter? I'm going with a solderless clip, if this affects the decision. If I didn't ask this question I would buy the D2Sun V3. I appreciate all your help and I'm sorry for writing such a long post. Just trying to be thorough and give all the information I think would aid in your assistance. Thanks a lot guys and if everyone agrees, please refer me to a good retailer as well. Hopefully I will be sending one of you guys money directly. Support the cause=screw the man.

the one best one would be d2pro9 v3, has all the features every chip has, has the jtag updates, good support from the team thus far, same team as the wiikey team so we know how long theyve been around (fyi they had a popular gc chip as well).
high quality build as well. the catch? must make sure youre getting the latest version v3 with 2.3/1.6 firmware.

ok this is the one I was previously interested in purchasing. do I need to buy the D2Prog to update it? is this the only way to update the firmware? or can I use DVDs? generally, how often does one need to update/upgrade the firmware for a modchip?

right now it has the latest firmware on it and is working out nicely so you wont need to update unless there was something major. The d2prog would need to be purchased if you needed to do an update to both the fpga and spi. If just the spi needs to be updated then you can use a dvd to do the update. You wouldnt need to update unless something new happens with game protection pretty much.

very interesting. im not familiar with the acronyms fpga and spi, but I suppose the point of what you said was the D2Pro9 is a good chip, lmao. so unless nintendo comes out with some type of new software piracy detection update which could detect backup disks or aftermarket hardware I would not need to update the modchip? is this accurate? and I am guessing that if there is a nintendo update that say, is required to play a certain game, this could be downloaded directly through the internet through my Wii, instead of having to "shield" my Wii from it. this is where I am most uncertain about how this modchip game works. there are apparently instances where I would NOT want to update my Wii. I guess I can research more of this on wiihacks but, nevertheless, I am very pleased with the information you have given me in regard to which chip is suited best to my Wii, and my respective needs. and how about the new wiikey2? this seems to be just as good as the D2Pro9 from what I have read about its features. then again it is fairly new so the verdict is still out I'm sure. again, thanks for your help, and I hope to be making a purchase very soon. perhaps before I go to sleep tonight.

Correct, currently it can play all the titles so you wouldnt need to update unless there was some kind of change that required it. Hopefully it will be a change that can be address with a simple dvd update, but if it cant and the chip needs to be reprogrammed its possible via the d2prog jtag update.
For now you can do the updates up to 3.3u from nintendo and you are safe, but when a new one comes out 3.4 you might want to wait and see what its doing before jumping the gun and updating. wiihacks would have the information.
The wiikey2 is really good so far, and we can put it on a v4c clip but its somewhat of a hack job since its wires from the chip to the clip, the official wiikey2 clip comes out in 2-3 weeks though.

so since you stated that the team from the original wiikey (1) made the D2Pro9, I assume they made the wiikey2. would I be correct in assuming the wiikey2 is the new D2Pro9? maybe I will wait until the new wiiclip comes out for the wiikey2 and maybe in that timeframe we will know more about any possible issues with the wiikey. or maybe Im just thinking too damn much, which is completely possible. pretty much why Ive been reading for months instead of playing a ton of games. but in the meantime I have gotten pretty damn good at rock band. thanks for all the info, i really appreciate you giving your time up to help a newbie like myself. its people like you that keep this thing going, and keep me motivated and interested in not only buying product, but learning more and more about the wii and its capabilities, and the capabilities of the programmers who construct the chips themselves. you've been more than helpful. do you provide tracking numbers to USA addresses? accept mastercard?

The wiikey2 is a slimmed down d2pro9 to help keep the cost down. I don't think it will replace the d2pro9, but its a good alternative that will cost less.
Anyways we do provide tracking to the USA and take major credit cards
If you're unsure still then take some time to think about it and review some more. Either choice you make you'll be happy
