Where could this modchip have come from??

Hello all -
I recently sent my wii in for warranty (it wouldn't play "super smash bros brawl"). Nintendo contacted us and said they could (would) not do the work because the unit has a "modchip" installed. (they were very nice on the phone) Now, up until that point I had never heard if a modchip much less know how to install one. No one in our household has ever had the unit open. We once brought it in to Braggamerights to have a new fan installed (cost about $50.00) and that is the only time I know of that it has been opened. We purchased it new at Target on black Friday, 2007.
Would Braggamerights have put this in without my knowledge?? Why? And for free??
Could it have come with it new from Target??
Any other thoughts or ideas? We're baffled.

Looks like you have been sold a refurbished unit, someone has modded it then returned it to store and you have been given it.

Dont they then have to send it to nintendo if the unit is returned to the retail store? Or am I missing somthing?

we bought it BRAND NEW smart one not at gamestop... TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!

What's with the shouting at wiimaster? He was just offering a suggestion, no need for sarcasm and yelling. That kind of attitude will only get you ignored here.

Fact is someone could have returned it modded to Target. Maybe they switched it out for an unmodded brand new one within the return period, and you picked up the leftovers. Maybe there is no modchip inside at all, did you look? Could've been a miscommunication and N was referring to the fan you had replaced and, when they saw that, assumed you had tampered with the console.

I said could have, not should have. Prostitution's illegal in most of the world too, you think it doesn't happen?

Prostitution is a little different then a chain store like target selling refurbished units as new. When a wii is returned to the store it is then returned to nintendo.

And maybe this one day, this one time, that didn't happen. Sometimes procedures don't get followed. This is my final post here as this discussion is getting off topic.

Maybe the word refurbished I used is wrong word to use. But every wii returned back to a store does not go back to the distributor. In UK we have a 14 day return policy, item will be returned, re-boxed and sold on again as NEW. Someone may have returned this after hard modding it and just stated they did not want it anymore.
