ancient modchip?

When i opened my wii, i found this "modchip" i have never seen it before on the net. i'll be grateful if anyone can help identifying it.
i got my modded wii august 2007. it's an ntsc-u. perhaps it is locally modded.
it works perfectly on any brand back-up dvds, +R & -R, works as well on back-up gc dvds, too (with the same region).
the only problem is i got my first #001 error for SMG, & later for indiana jones.

is there any dangerous possibility if it is taken off & replaced with a more decent & branded modchip? (thinking to go & have a modder do it).

btw, when i tried to open up my wii & closed it again, i ended up with 1 or 2 screw that become abrasived (the + on the head of the screw become o).
& i cannot open it again. my husband said it needs to be drilled.
is there any other option? i don't like the idea drilling my precious wii

Yes, it looks like the latest version of the update is 2.4 but I didn't see what the dat of that update was released. It does support the ATMEGA chip. You should go the following site and read to find out as much as possible about chip and the update.

i think you should rip that thing out and stick in a wiikey. even if you get that thing reprogrammed, it will be a pain everytime there is an update. with the wiikey, you got dvd updates.

i've tried to update using the latest openwii. but it seems doesn't work.
guess it had old version of openwii (older than 2.2) that couldn't be update by dvd
i think i will replace it with a wiikey.

right now i need to figure out what to do with broken screws problem.
the screw head has changed from the original (+) to (o) so my wii cannot be opened anymore.
should the broken screws be drilled? or is there a better way?
