Help for a newbie

Hey guys,
wondering if anyone could help me,
tried looking around on the net everywhere but I cant work out what chip I have in my wii, it was done for me by my brothers friend and I was never told what type of chip it is.
I can tell you that:
I purchased it in dec 2006, that serial tracker site said it was most likely a GC2-DMS. I got it chipped in August last year.
SMG backups dont work, yet the original does, Metroid3, SSBB backups also dont work. all other backups work fine.
SSBB original released today in australia and I got it, the original wont work either.
I've tried using the wii-key updates and cyclowiz and no luck, atleast the cyclowiz loads up, wii key updates just say unable to read disc.

can someone point this rookie in the right direction!!??

thanks

update:
I downloaded a 'padded' version of wiikey update 1.9x
it loaded fine and did the update to 100% but still doesnt work on SSBB.
is there anything else I can do?
if the test went to 100% does that mean I have a wiikey??

do you get device error oo1 prior to doing the 1.9s update... if yes.. then the 1.9s was the right thing to do.
now Do the 1.4 config after the 1.9s.

does SMG backup work..if yes... the it's your burn.

hey modderman,
I have never got any device errors just unable to read discs, tried installing the 1.4 update for the wiikey and it just says an error has occured, eject and power off.

is it possible that any other firmwares could work for me?

and is it possible that I just have a bad chip that cant be updated?

Also, SMG, Metroid3, SSBB (original and backup) still dont work
